De Verlosser uit de dood

God heeft in Adam alle mensen onderworpen aan de dood. Want allen hebben zich door hun zonde met Adam verbonden, en delen in het vonnis dat God over hem uitsprak. Sindsdien worden wij allen door de dood gevangen gehouden. Niemand kan aan de dood ontkomen, en niemand kan zichzelf, een goede vriend, of dierbaar familielid, op eigen kracht uit het graf bevrijden. Er is geen mogelijkheid een losprijs of borgtocht te betalen, zodat een gevangene van de dood op vrije voeten komt:

“Niemand kan ooit een broeder (zichzelf) loskopen, noch God zijn losprijs betalen, – te hoog is immers de prijs voor hun leven, voor altijd ontoereikend – dat hij voor immer zou voortleven, de groeve niet zou zien.” (Psalm 49:8-10)

Toch zijn er aan wie geloven beloften gegeven, die nog niet zijn vervuld. En omdat God trouw is aan Zijn gegeven woord, beloofde Hij voor hen een Verlosser te zijn. Wat in dit verband betekent dat Hij hen zal bevrijden uit hun gevangenis, van de ketenen van de dood. In de Bijbel zien we de zekerheid die deze hoop biedt, en de vreugde over dit vooruitzicht dat God geeft:

“Hoop op God, want ik zal Hem nog loven, mijn Verlosser en mijn God.”
“Maar God zal mijn leven verlossen uit de macht van het dodenrijk …”
(Psalm 42:6 en Psalm 49:16)
“Looft de HERE … die uw leven verlost van de groeve, die u kroont met goedertierenheid en barmhartigheid, die uw ziel verzadigd met het goede …”(Psalm 103:2-5)

Hoewel in een aantal gevallen bedoeld wordt, dat God voorkwam dat iemand stierf (zie bijvoorbeeld Job 33:24 en 28), gaat het in Psalm 49 duidelijk over de verlossing uit de dood (zie vers 14 en 15 voor het verband met het ‘maar’ van vers 16).

“13 (49-14) Deze hun weg is een dwaasheid van hen; nochtans hebben hun nakomelingen een welbehagen in hun woorden. Sela. 14 (49-15) Men zet hen als schapen in het graf, de dood zal hen afweiden; en de oprechten zullen over hen heersen in dien morgenstond; en het graf zal hun gedaante verslijten, elk uit zijn woning. 15 (49-16) Maar God zal mijn ziel van het geweld des grafs verlossen, want Hij zal mij opnemen. Sela. 16 (49-17) Vrees niet, wanneer een man rijk wordt, wanneer de eer van zijn huis groot wordt;” (Ps 49:13-16 STV)

God is, als de bezitter van inherent onsterfelijk leven, de enige die ons daaruit kan bevrijden (Jesaja 43:11; 45:21; 47:4;63:16).

“Ik, Ik ben de HEERE, en er is geen Heiland behalve Mij.” (Jes 43:11 STV)

“Verkondigt en treedt hier toe, ja, beraadslaagt samen: wie heeft dat laten horen van ouds her? Wie heeft dat van toen af verkondigd? Ben Ik het niet, de HEERE? en er is geen God meer behalve Mij, een rechtvaardig God, en een Heiland, niemand is er dan Ik.” (Jes 45:21 STV)

“Onzes Verlossers Naam is HEERE der heirscharen, de Heilige Israëls.” (Jes 47:4 STV)

“Gij zijt toch onze Vader, want Abraham weet van ons niet, en Israël kent ons niet; Gij, o HEERE! zijt onze Vader, onze Verlosser van ouds af is Uw Naam.” (Jes 63:16 STV)

In Psalm 102 is er een verband tussen gevangenschap en de dood als iets menselijkerwijs onafwendbaars en onherroepelijks, maar waaruit God bevrijdt door de boeien en ketenen van gevangenen los te maken.

Ook in andere psalmen is God de bevrijder van gevangenen:

“De HERE maakt de gevangenen los …” (Psalm 146:8)
“… die gevangenen uitleidt in voorspoed …” (Psalm 68:7)
“… de HERE heeft uit de hemel op aarde geschouwd, om het zuchten van de gevangenen te horen, om de ten dode gedoemden te bevrijden …” (Psalm 102:20-21; zie ook Psalm 79:11)

Gelooft u het getuigenis van God, zijn Zoon en zijn dienaren?

“Banden van de dood hadden mij omvangen … Ach HERE, red mijn leven …Want u hebt mijn leven van de dood gered … Kostbaar is in de ogen van de HERE de dood van zijn gunstgenoten … U hebt mijn banden losgemaakt.” (Psalm 116)

Wanneer God in staat is om te verhinderen dat iemand sterft, dan kan Hij ook bevrijden wie gestorven zijn. In het boek van de profeet Hosea blijkt inderdaad dat God daartoe in staat is:

“Zou Ik hen uit de macht van het dodenrijk bevrijden, van de dood loskopen?” (Hosea 13:14)

De vraag is hier niet of Hij het kan, maar of Hij het wil, gezien de zonden van het volk Israël. Het bevrijdende antwoord is: Ja!
God zal de gelovige bevrijden uit de hand van zijn, en daarmee Gods vijanden, ook van de grootste en machtigste van alle, de dood:

“God staat op, zijn vijanden worden verstrooid … zo vergaan de goddelozen voor Het aangezicht van God. Maar de rechtvaardigen verheugen zich, zij juichen voor het aangezicht van God … die gevangenen uitleidt in voorspoed.” (Psalm 68:2-7)“

“Ja heil en goedertierenheid zullen mij volgen, al de dagen van mijn leven; ik zal in het huis van de HERE verblijven tot in lengte van dagen” (Psalm 23:6).

Het bewijs dat God de rechtvaardigen niet alleen kan, maar ook daadwerkelijk zal verlossen uit de dood, is te zien in de opwekking tot eeuwig leven van Zijn Zoon. Ook hij kon zichzelf niet bevrijden van de dood; machteloos lag hij in het graf, totdat God hem daaruit bevrijdde. Dit was de vervulling van de belofte, die Hij eeuwen daarvoor had gegeven in profetieën, die op Jezus Christus betrekking hebben:

“Omdat hij Mij zeer bemint, zal Ik hem bevrijden … Ik zal hem uitredden en tot ere brengen. Met lengte van dagen zal Ik hem verzadigen …” (Psalm 91:14-16; zie voor verband met Christus Jezus vers 11-12/Luc. 4:10-11)

“11 Want Hij zal Zijn engelen van u bevelen, dat zij u bewaren in al uw wegen. 12 Zij zullen u op de handen dragen, opdat gij uw voet aan geen steen stoot.” (Ps 91:11-12 STV)

“10 Want er is geschreven, dat Hij Zijn engelen van U bevelen zal, dat zij U bewaren zullen; 11 En dat zij U op de handen nemen zullen, opdat Gij Uw voet niet te eniger tijd aan een steen stoot.” (Lu 4:10-11 STV)

“Leven vroeg hij van U; U gaf het hem, lengte van dagen voor altoos enimmer.” (Psalm 21:5)

De gevangenschap van de Here Jezus in de dood wordt benadrukt door het feit, dat er na zijn begrafenis een grote steen voor het graf werd gerold, deze werd verzegeld, en er, zoals bij gevaarlijke gevangenen gebruikelijk was, vier soldaten voor het graf werden gezet om het (lees Hem) te bewaken (Mattheüs 27:62-66). Desondanks bleek het graf na enkele dagen leeg te zijn, zonder geschonden te zijn:

“Wat zoekt u de levende bij de doden? Hij is hier niet, maar Hij is opgewekt.” (Lucas 24:5-6)

“God evenwel heeft Hem opgewekt, want Hij verbrak de weeën van de dood, naardien het niet mogelijk was, dat Hij door hem werd vastgehouden.” (Handelingen 2:24)

Voor de apostelen was dit de vervulling van profetische woorden van David, die, omdat hij gestorven en begraven is, op iemand anders dan hemzelf betrekking moeten hebben (Handelingen 2:25-32; 13:34-37):

Ik stel mij de HERE bestendig voor ogen; omdat Hij aan mijn rechterhand staat, wankel ik niet. Daarom verheugt zich mijn hart en juicht mijn ziel, zelfs mijn vlees zal in veiligheid wonen; want God geeft mijn ziel niet prijs aan het dodenrijk, noch laat U uw gunstgenoot de groeve zien.” (Psalm 16:8-11)

Hiermee heeft God een zeer groot werk verricht: voor het eerst werd een mens niet tijdelijk opgewekt uit de doden, om – zoals tot dan toe het geval was geweest – later toch weer te sterven, maar voor eeuwig. De kracht die God gebruikte bij de opwekking tot eeuwig leven van zijn Zoon, zal Hij ook voor anderen gebruiken:

“… hoe overweldigend groot zijn kracht is aan ons, die geloven, naar de werking van de sterkte van zijn macht, die Hij heeft gewrocht in Christus, door Hem uit de doden op te wekken en Hem te zetten aan zijn rechterhand…” (Efeziërs 1:19-20; vergelijk 1 Korintiërs 6:14)

“En God heeft ook den Heere opgewekt, en zal ons opwekken door Zijn kracht.” (1Co 6:14 STV)

Deze belofte geldt voor wie in dit leven de begeerten van het vlees doden en leven voor God:

“Indien Christus in u is, dan is wel het lichaam dood vanwege de zonde, maar de geest is leven vanwege de gerechtigheid. En indien de Geest van Hem, die Jezus uit de doden heeft opgewekt, in u woont, dan zal Hij, die Christus Jezus opgewekt heeft, ook uw sterfelijke lichamen levend maken door zijn Geest, die in u woont” (Romeinen 8:10-11).

Geschapen mens

God heeft de mens geschapen naar Zijn beeld en als Zijn gelijkenis. Maar hij werd niet zo geprogrammeerd, dat hij alleen maar kon doen wat God wilde. De mens werd geschapen met een vrije wil en heeft dus keuzevrijheid. God stelt ons door middel van Zijn opvoedingsproces voor keuzes. Uit wat wij kiezen, blijkt of wij in Hem geloven, en of wij Hem echt willen gehoorzamen. De eerste mensen gaven toe aan de verleiding iets te doen dat God hen had verboden. Zij meenden Gods doel met hun schepping in en door het vlees te kunnen bereiken, in plaats van zich van Hem afhankelijk te stellen en geduld te tonen.

Het lag niet aan God dat zij Zijn wil overtraden maar aan de mens. God was heel duidelijk geweest, en de mens had de boodschap begrepen. Zij waren geheel vrij in de hof, op één kleine beperking na: het eten van één bepaalde boom was niet toegestaan:

“Van alle bomen in de hof mag u vrij eten, maar van de boom van de kennis van goed en kwaad zult u niet eten, want ten dage, dat u daarvan eet, zult uvoorzeker sterven.” (Genesis 2:17; vergelijk 3:3)

De slang echter verleidde Eva met schoonklinkende woorden, die suggereerden dat zij niet zou sterven, maar als God zijn en zelf zou weten wat goed en kwaad is, en vanuit die kennis zelf in staat zijn de juiste keuzes te maken (Gen. 3:4-5). Iets dat overigens in de kern van de zaak neer kwam op de vervulling van hun mogelijk diep verlangen zelf te mogen uitmaken wat goed en kwaad is. Het valt inderdaad niet te ontkennen, dat zij niet stierf op het moment dat zij van de vrucht van die boom at. Dit neemt echter niet weg dat de dood, als de straf op de overtreding van Gods gebod, haar en Adam uiteindelijk daadwerkelijk trof.

Het sterven is een proces dat begint bij de eerste zonde. Paulus zag zichzelf in eenzelfde positie als Adam: toen hij jong was, wist hij niet wat zonde was. Maar toen hij ouder werd en geacht werd de wet te kennen, begon hij te sterven door de zonde:

“Ik heb eertijds geleefd zonder wet; toen echter het gebod kwam, begon de zonde te leven, maar ik begon te sterven, en het gebod dat ten leven moest leiden, bleek voor mij juist ten dode te zijn; want de zonde heeft uitgaande van het gebod, mij misleid en door middel daarvan gedood.” (Romeinen 7:7-12)“

… als de zonde volgroeid is, brengt zij de dood voort.” (Jakobus 1:15)

“Want het loon dat de zonde geeft is de dood.” (Romeinen 6:23; vergelijk Spreuken 12:28)

“Want de gezindheid van het vlees is de dood, maar de gezindheid van de Geest is leven en vrede.” (Romeinen 8:6)

Zondig nageslacht

De dood trof niet alleen Adam en Eva, maar allen die uit hen voortkwamen (zie Gen. 5). Alle mensen volgden hen na in hun zonde aan God gelijk te willen zijn, zonder in Hem te geloven. En zoals Adam en Eva alle zondaars vertegenwoordigen, werden allen inbegrepen in Gods doodvonnis over hen:

“Daarom, gelijk door één mens de zonde de wereld is binnengekomen en door de zonde de dood, zo is ook de dood tot alle mensen doorgegaan, omdat allen gezondigd hebben.” (Romeinen 5:12)

“Want, omdat de dood er is door een mens … Want evenals in Adam allen sterven …” (1 Korintiërs 15:21-22)

Sterven wij, dan wordt het scheppingsproces als het ware omgekeerd: bij zijn schepping werd de levensadem in de neus van de mens geblazen, zodat hij leefde; wanneer wij sterven, blazen wij onze laatste adem uit en vergaan vervolgens weer tot het stof waaruit wij gemaakt zijn:

“… totdat u tot de aardbodem wederkeert, omdat u daaruit genomen bent; want stof bent u en tot stof zult u wederkeren.” (Genesis 3:19)“

… neemt U hun adem weg, zij sterven en keren weder tot hun stof.”(Psalm 104:29; zie 90:3; 146:4).“

… alles is geworden uit stof, en alles keert weder tot stof … zoals het geweest is, en de geest (levensgeest, adem) wederkeert tot God, die hem geschonken heeft” (Prediker 3:19-20 en 12:7).

In dit opzicht verschilt een mens niet van de dieren. Die zijn zich niet bewust van een God die voor hen zorgt, maar leven een korte tijd en verdwijnen daarna voor altijd in het niets. Alle schepselen hebben van God dezelfde levensadem gekregen, en Hij neemt die op Zijn tijd terug. Voor wie geen rekening met God houdt, is er, net als voor de redeloze dieren, geen enkele hoop:

“… zo stijgt wie in het dodenrijk nederdaalt, niet weer op.” (Job 7:9; in de betekenis van: keert niet weer)

“… de mens met al zijn praal houdt geen stand; hij is gelijk aan de beesten, die vergaan … Als schapen zinken zij in het dodenrijk, de dood weidt hen.” (Psalm 49:13 en 15/21)

Wie in het graf ligt, is zich van niets bewust. Hij kan niets meer doen en nergens meer over nadenken. Ook de goddeloze kan zijn jaloerse haat ten opzichte van wie geloven niet meer uitleven:

“De levenden weten ten minste, dat zij sterven moeten, maar de doden weten niets … want er is geen werk of overleg of kennis of wijsheid in het dodenrijk, waarheen u gaat.” (Prediker 9:5 en 10)

“Want in de dood is aan U geen gedachtenis; wie zou U loven in het dodenrijk?” (Psalm 6:6; 115:17; Jesaja 38:18)

De dood is als een onverzadigbaar roofdier dat zijn prooi grijpt en niet meer loslaat. Of als een koning, die mensen rooft en met strenge hand over hen regeert, alsof het slaven zijn die hij niet wil laten gaan. Zij zitten in een gevangenis, een kerker, waaruit zij niet meer kunnen ontsnappen:

“… doet het dodenrijk zijn keel wijd open en spert het zijn muil op, mateloos…” (Jesaja 5:14; Hab. 2:5)

“Droogte en hitte roven het sneeuwwater weg, zo het dodenrijk hen die zondigen.” (Job 24:19)

“… heeft de dood als koning geheerst … Want, indien door de overtreding van de ene de dood als koning is gaan heersen door die ene …” (Rom 5:14 en 17)

“Weet u niet, dat u hem, in wiens dienst u zich stelt als slaven … ook moet gehoorzamen als slaven, hetzij … van de zonde tot de dood, hetzij van de gehoorzaamheid tot gerechtigheid?” (Romeinen 6:16)

De dood wordt daarom door gelovigen in de Bijbel terecht gezien als de grote vijand van de mens, uit wiens macht zij hun geliefden, laat staan zichzelf, niet kunnen bevrijden:

“Welk mens leeft er, die de dood niet zien zal, die zijn ziel zal redden uit de macht van het dodenrijk?” (Psalm 89:49; vergelijk 8:5 en 116:3)

“Niemand kan ooit een broeder loskopen, noch God zijn losprijs betalen … dat hij voor immer zou voortleven, de groeve niet zou zien.” (Psalm 49:8-13).

Vraag ter overdenking: Is de toestand van de doden veranderd sinds de komst van Jezus?

Wie sterven na een leven van geloof, blijven niet eeuwig dood. Hun toestand wordt in de Bijbel voorgesteld als een slaap, waaruit het mogelijk is te ontwaken bij het aanbreken van een nieuwe dag. Zij zijn ontslapen (ingeslapen), zijn de rust van de doodslaap ingegaan en wachten in het stof tot Jehovah hen wekt: Marc. 5:39/Luc.8:52; Joh. 11:11-13; 1 Kor. 15:17-18; 1 Thess. 4:14-15; Dan 12:2/13; Hand. 13:36; Jes. 26:19/Efez. 5:14; Joh. 11:24.

De mens, geschapen naar Gods beeld en als Zijn gelijkenis

De mens is voortdurend op zoek naar zijn identiteit:

‘Wie zijn wij en waar komen wij vandaan?’.

Voor wie niet gelooft in de Schepper is dit een nooit eindigende zoektocht. Maar in plaats van het wetenschappelijk bewijs voor onze oorsprong in de natuurwereld te zoeken, zou onderzoek naar de plaats van de mens, te midden van alle andere wezens, tot een ander resultaat kunnen leiden. Want het valt niet te ontkennen dat de mens uniek is in de natuurwereld.

De Bijbel vertelt dat wij hier niet toevallig zijn, als het product van een langzame ontwikkeling uit andere, primitievere wezens, maar dat God de mens naar Zijn plan heeft gemaakt:

“En God zei: Laat Ons mensen maken naar ons beeld, als onze gelijkenis, opdat zij heersen over de vissen in de zee en over het gevogelte aan de hemel en over het vee en over de gehele aarde en over al het kruipende gedierte dat op de aardbodem kruipt. En God schiep de mens naar zijn beeld; naar Gods beeld schiep Hij hem; man en vrouw schiep Hij hen”. (Genesis 1:26; vergelijk 9:6)

Dat dit geen primitief idee is, uit een ver verleden, toont het geloof van Jezus en de apostelen. Zij geloofden dat God verantwoordelijk is voor alle leven en dat alle mensen zijn voortgekomen uit dit eerste mensenpaar (Matth. 19:4; 1 Kor. 11 :7; Jac. 3:9). Maar wat wordt er bedoeld met:

‘naar ons beeld, als onze gelijkenis’?

De mens heeft in bepaalde opzichten een gelijkenis met zijn Schepper. Met de schepping van de mens heeft God iets van Zichzelf ‘gereproduceerd’ en er moet iets van God in de mens te herkennen zijn. Wanneer deze later zelf nageslacht voortbrengt, legt hij op zijn beurt zijn eigenschappen daarin; het zijn afdrukken van zijn wezen:

“Adam … verwekte (een zoon) naar zijn gelijkenis, als zijn beeld”. (Genesis 5:3)

Hiermee worden echter niet meer het beeld en gelijkenis van God bedoeld, maar de mens zoals Adam geworden is: zondig in het vlees, zodat hij de heerlijkheid van God niet in zich draagt. Wanneer dit voor altijd was voortgegaan, zou Gods scheppingswerk een hopeloze mislukking zijn. God zei echter dat het goed was wat Hij had geschapen. In zijn alwetendheid moet Hij gezien hebben dat er uiteindelijk wel mensen met de heerlijkheid van zijn beeld en gelijkenis zouden zijn:

“Want allen hebben gezondigd en derven (lopen mis) de heerlijkheid van God”.

“… juist om de rijkdom van zijn heerlijkheid bekend te maken over de voorwerpen van ontferming, die Hij tot heerlijkheid heeft voorbereid”. (Romeinen 9:23)

“Wij dan … hebben vrede met God door onze Here Jezus Christus, door wie wij ook de toegang hebben verkregen tot deze genade, waarin wij staan, en roemen in de hoop op de heerlijkheid van God”. (Romeinen 5:1-2)

Het natuurlijke nageslacht van Adam kan Gods heerlijkheid niet weerspiegelen. Dit is een voortdurend vraagpunt van gelovigen aan God. David vroeg zich in een Psalm af welke verklaring er is voor die hoge plaats van de mens in Gods onmetelijke heelal, en de schrijver van de brief aan de Hebreeën wijst op de vervulling van Gods plan met ons in Christus Jezus:

“Wat is de mens, dat U aan hem denkt, en het mensenkind, dat U naar hem omziet? Toch hebt U hem bijna goddelijk gemaakt, en hem met heerlijkheid en luister gekroond”. (Psalm 8:4-9)

“… maar wij zien Jezus … met heerlijkheid en eer gekroond”. (Hebreeën 2:6-9)

In de persoon van Jezus heeft God uit de mensheid een nieuwe mens verwekt, die deze heerlijkheid van God wel draagt en weerspiegelt. De apostelen getuigen in de evangelieverslagen en brieven van wat zij hebben gezien en ervaren van deze ‘zoon des mensen’, de mens bij uitnemendheid:

“Wij hebben zijn heerlijkheid aanschouwd, een heerlijkheid als van de eniggeborene van de Vader, vol van genade en waarheid”. (Johannes 1:14)

“Deze de afstraling van zijn heerlijkheid, en de afdruk van zijn wezen”(Hebreeën 1:3)

Zij hebben twee kanten van hem gezien: zijn gestalte als dienstknecht, die volmaakt de wil van God deed, en zijn verheerlijkte gestalte toen zij met hem op de berg waren (Luc. 9:29; 2 Petr. 1:16). Zijn verheerlijking was een voorproef van wat hij zou ontvangen, wanneer hij de wil van zijn Vader tot het laatst zou doen. Hierin is hij het voorbeeld voor wie in hem gelooft:

“Laat die gezindheid bij u zijn, welke ook in Christus Jezus was, die in de gestalte van God zijnde, het God gelijk zijn niet als een roof heeft geacht, maar de gestalte van een dienstknecht heeft aangenomen … heeft Hij zich vernederd en is gehoorzaam geworden tot de dood, ja tot de kruisdood. Daarom heeft God Hem ook uitermate verhoogd” (Filippenzen 2:5-9; vergelijk Romeinen 8:5-7).

Door verbondenheid met Christus Jezus, en in hun leven dezelfde gezindheid te tonen als hij, kunnen ook andere mensen deel krijgen aan dezelfde natuur en dezelfde heerlijkheid weerspiegelen als hij:

“Want het voegde Hem…dat Hij, om vele zonen tot heerlijkheid te brengen, de Leidsman van hun behoudenis door lijden zou volmaken”. (Hebreeën 2:10)

“Daartoe heeft Hij u ook door ons evangelie geroepen tot het verkrijgen van de heerlijkheid van onze Here Jezus Christus”. (2 Thess. 2:14; 1 Thess. 2:12;vergelijk 2 Timotheüs 2:10)

“En wij allen, die … de heerlijkheid van de Here weerspiegelen, veranderen naar hetzelfde beeld van heerlijkheid tot heerlijkheid …”. (2 Korintiërs 3:18)

Wanneer dit werkelijkheid is geworden, zal Gods doel met de schepping zijn bereikt. Dan zijn de mensen als Zijn zonen, dragen zij Zijn beeld en zal de aarde van Zijn heerlijkheid vol worden:

Psalm 8 en de heerlijkheid van de mens in Christus Jezus

De aandacht van gelovigen richt zich op Gods doel met de schepping van de mens, zoals geopenbaard in het boek Genesis (1:26). Koning David schreef in Psalm 8 een overdenking hiervan. Hij zag de heerlijkheid van de Hemelkoning (verzen 1-4), die de mens schiep om zijn onderkoning op aarde te zijn (vergelijk Genesis 41:40) en te regeren over alle wezens daarop (verzen 4-9). Omdat het hier om Adam ging, heeft David waarschijnlijk in eerste instantie een specifieke mens op het oog. In Psalm 21:6 beschouwt hij zijn eigen unieke positie als koning op Gods troon op aarde. In Psalm 72 spreekt hij over zijn zoon Salomo. Maar beide waren zij niet de eeuwige koning die God beloofde (zie 2 Samuël 7:11-29; Psalm 21:5 en 72:17). Genesis 1 en Psalm 8 vormen dan ook het begin van een rode draad in de openbaring van Gods doel met de mens, die ons leidt tot het Nieuwe Testament en de daarin geopenbaarde vervulling in Christus Jezus (Luc. 10:22; Ef. 1:21-22; 1 Kor. 15:25-27; Hebr. 1:1-4en 2:5-9; Kolos. 1:15-17) en doorgaat in allen die geloven (Hebr. 2:10; Rom. 8:17).

Wie het antwoord zoekt op de vraag

‘wie of wat zijn engelen?’

merkt al snel dat de Bijbel weinig tot niets vertelt over hun natuur en bestaanswijze. De reden is dat het in de Bijbel gaat om de verhouding tussen God en mensen. En juist in verband daarmee vinden we een belangrijke uitspraak, die ons helpt bij het begrijpen van de rol die zij spelen in Gods werk:

“Zijn zij niet allen dienende geesten, die uitgezonden worden ten dienste van hen, die het heil zullen beërven?”. (Hebr. 1: 14; vergelijk 1:7 en Psalm 103:20)

Ondanks dat deze woorden niet bedoeld waren om de natuur van engelen te beschrijven, leren we dat zij ‘geesten’ zijn. Paulus schreef dat er ‘natuurlijke lichamen’ zijn (van vlees en bloed, zoals wij nu zijn) en ‘geestelijke lichamen’. Mensen die overgaan van natuurlijk naar geestelijk leven worden ‘uit de hemel’ of ‘hemelsen’ genoemd, in tegenstelling tot wie ‘uit de aarde’, ‘stoffelijk’, zijn. Dat ‘natuurlijke lichaam’ kan het eeuwige leven niet binnengaan, omdat het aardsgezind, ongeestelijk is. Alleen het volmaakte en onvergankelijke (zoals engelen) kan in Gods nabijheid verblijven (1 Kor. 15:35-50).

“35 Maar, zal iemand vragen, hoe verrijzen de doden? Met wat voor lichaam?
36 Een dwaze vraag!
Ook wat gij zelf zaait moet eerst sterven voor het tot leven komt, 37 en wat gij zaait is slechts een graankorrel of iets dergelijks, en heeft nog niet de vorm die het zal krijgen. 38 God geeft er een lichaam aan zoals Hij dat gewild heeft, en wel aan elk zaad zijn eigen lichaam. 39 Ook is niet alle vlees hetzelfde, er is verschil tussen het vlees van mensen en dat van dieren en dat van vogels en van vissen.

40 En er zijn hemelse lichamen en aardse lichamen, maar de glans der hemelse is anders dan die van de aardse.
41 De luister van de zon is anders dan die van de maan, en die van de sterren is weer anders; zelfs de ene ster verschilt van de andere in schittering. 42 Zo is het ook met de opstanding van de doden; wat gezaaid wordt in vergankelijkheid, verrijst in onvergankelijkheid; 43 wat gezaaid wordt in geringheid en zwakte, verrijst in heerlijkheid en kracht. 44 Een natuurlijk lichaam wordt gezaaid, een geestelijk lichaam verrijst. Zoals er een natuurlijk lichaam bestaat, bestaat er ook een geestelijk lichaam. 45 In deze zin staat er geschreven: De eerste mens, Adam, werd een levens wezen. De laatste Adam werd een levendmakende Geest. 46 Maar het geestelijke komt niet het eerst; het natuurlijke gaat vooraf, daarna komt het geestelijke. 47 De eerste mens, uit de aarde genomen, is aards; de tweede is uit de hemel. 48 Zoals die eerste mens van aarde zijn alle aardse mensen, zoals de hemelse mens zullen alle hemelsen zijn. 49 En gelijk wij het beeld van de aardse hebben gedragen, zo zullen wij ook het beeld dragen van de hemelse mens. 50 Ik bedoel dit, broeders: vlees en bloed kunnen niet delen in het koninkrijk van God en het vergankelijke heeft geen aandeel in de onvergankelijkheid.” (1Co 15:35-50 WV78)

Dit komt overeen met wat Jezus zei:

“Voorwaar, voorwaar, Ik zeg u, tenzij iemand geboren wordt uit water en Geest, kan hij het Koninkrijk van God niet binnen gaan. Wat uit het vlees geboren is, is vlees, en wat uit de Geest geboren is, is geest”. (Johannes 3:5-6)

“Maar wie waardig gekeurd zijn deel te verkrijgen aan die eeuw en aan de opstanding uit de doden, huwen niet en worden niet ten huwelijk genomen. Want zij kunnen niet meer sterven; immers, zij zijn aan de engelen gelijk en zij zijn kinderen van God, omdat zij kinderen van de opstanding zijn”. (Luc. 20:35-36)

Hieruit leiden wij af dat zij volmaakt en onsterfelijk zijn en dat wij, als wij eeuwig leven ontvangen, een volmaakt ‘hemels lichaam’ zullen hebben,en in die zin aan hen gelijk zullen zijn. De schrijver van de brief aan de Hebreeën herinnert, door Psalm 8 te citeren, aan het hoge doel van God met de schepping van de mens en de vervulling daarvan in Christus Jezus:

“Want niet aan engelen heeft Hij de toekomende wereld, waarvan wij spreken, onderworpen. Maar iemand heeft ergens betuigd, zeggende: Wat is de mens, dat U hem gedenkt, of de mensenzoon, dat U naar hem omziet? U hebt hem voor een korte tijd beneden de engelen gesteld, met heerlijkheid en eer hebt u hem gekroond … wij zien Jezus, die voor een korte tijd beneden de engelen gesteld was vanwege het lijden van de dood … met heerlijkheid gekroond” (Hebreeën 2:5-9).

Gelooft u het getuigenis van God, zijn Zoon en zijn dienaren?

Christus Jezus is de eerste van allen die behoren tot de geestelijke schepping, meer geworden dan de engelen:

“Tot wie van de engelen heeft Hij ooit gezegd: Mijn Zoon bent U … Zet U aan mijn rechterhand…”. (Hebreeën 1:5 en 13)

“Jezus Christus, die aan de rechterhand van God is, naar de hemel gegaan,terwijl engelen en machten en krachten Hem onderworpen zijn”. (1 Petrus3:21-22)

“En Hem moeten alle engelen van God huldigen”. (Hebreeën 1:6)

De Nazareense leermeester Jezus zei dat de engelen voortdurend het aangezicht zien van God (Mattheüs 18:10). In Openbaring 5:11-13 zien we hen dan ook rondde troon van God in de hemel, in lofprijzing tot Hem en zijn Zoon.

“11 En terwijl ik keek, hoorde ik de stem van talloze engelen rondom de troon en de dieren en de oudsten; en hun getal was tienduizenden tienduizenden en duizenden duizendtallen; 12 en zij riepen luid:

‘Waardig is het Lam dat geslacht werd, te ontvangen de macht en de rijkdom, de wijsheid en de kracht, en eer en heerlijkheid en lof.’

13 En elk schepsel in de hemel en op de aarde en onder de aarde en in de zee, het ganse heelal hoorde ik roepen:

‘Aan Hem die gezeten is op de troon en aan het Lam zij de lof en de eer en de roem en de kracht in de eeuwen der eeuwen!’” (Opb 5:11-13 WV78)

Wij mensen kunnen Gods aangezicht niet zien vanwege onze onreinheid door de zonde (Exodus 33:20). Dat engelen dat wel kunnen, houdt in dat zij zonder zonde zijn en dus volmaakt (vergelijk dit met Christus Jezus in Hebreeën 7:26).

“ Zulk een hogepriester hadden wij ook nodig: een die heilig is, schuldeloos, onbesmet, afgescheiden van de zondaars, hoog verheven boven de hemelen;” (Heb 7:26 WV78)

Vervulling van Gods belofte

God zendt engelen uit als zijn betrouwbare dienaren ten behoeve van mensen. Zij doen voor Hem vele taken in verband met de voltooiing van zijn scheppingswerk en zijn heilswerk ten behoeve van mensen. Het uitzenden van zijn Geest kan daarom ook betrekking hebben op het zenden van een engel, in wie God zijn macht en kracht legde:

“Toen riepen wij tot de Here, en Hij hoorde onze stem, zond een engel en leidde ons uit Egypte”. (Numeri 20:16)

“In al hun benauwdheid was ook Hij (God) benauwd, en de Engel van zijn aangezicht heeft hen gered”. (Jesaja 63:9)

“… u, die de wet ontvangen hebt op beschikking van engelen”. (Hand. 7:53)

“Ik ben Gabriël, die voor Gods aangezicht sta, en ik ben gekomen om tot u (Maria) te spreken en deze blijmare te verkondigen”. (Lucas 1:18-29)

Een voorbeeld van het uitzenden van engelen ten dienste van hen die het heil zullen beërven, vinden we in het leven van de Heer Jezus. Na de verzoeking in de woestijn dienden engelen hem (Mattheüs 4:11). Maar al eerder in zijn leven waren zij werkzaam om te zorgen dat hem niets overkwam, voordat de bestemde tijd was gekomen (Mattheüs 2:13). Dit zijn vervullingen van Gods beloften in Psalm 91:

“Aan zijn engelen zal Hij opdracht geven aangaande U, en op handen zullen zij u dragen, opdat U uw voet niet aan een steen stoot”. (Mattheüs 4:6; Lucas 4:10; Psalm 91:11-12)

Maar ook anderen hebben de vervulling van Gods belofte van bijstand ervaren, door de nabijheid van engelen, op momenten dat er menselijkerwijs gesproken geen redding meer mogelijk was:

“De engel van de Here legert Zich rondom wie Hem vrezen, en redt hen”. (Psalm 34:8)

“… zij die bij ons zijn, zijn talrijker dan zij, die bij hen zijn … en zie, de berg was vol vurige paarden en wagens rondom Elisa”. (2 Kon. 6:15-17)

“Maar een engel van de Here opende ’s nachts de deuren van de gevangenis en leidde hen naar buiten…”. (Hand. 5:19; vergelijk 12:7 en Daniël 6:23)

Soms moeten zij destructief werk doen, om de vervulling van Gods plan voortgang te kunnen laten vinden. Want wanneer God dit niet zou doen, zouden zijn kinderen ten onder gaan door het geweld van hun vijanden. De tijd van Noach laat dit duidelijk zien. Zij redden gelovigen uit de macht van de ongelovigen of straffen ongehoorzamen.

“Hij zond tegen hen zijn brandende toorn, verbolgenheid en angstwekkende gramschap, een schare van verderfengelen” (Psalm 78:49; vergelijk 1 Kron. 21:12 en 15; 2 Sam. 24:16-17).

Het werk van de engelen zal in ieder geval doorgaan tot de wederkomst van Christus Jezus uit de hemel. Hij heeft hen van God tot zijn beschikking gekregen om hem te helpen Gods wil uit te voeren, zoals mensen wakker roepen uit hun doodsslaap:

“…bij de openbaring van de Here Jezus van de hemel met de engelen van zijn kracht”. (2 Thessalonicenzen 1:7)

“En Hij zal zijn engelen uitzenden met luid bazuingeschal en zij zullen zijn uitverkorenen verzamelen uit de vier windstreken, van het ene uiterste van de hemelen tot het andere”. (Mattheüs 24:31)

“De Zoon des mensen zal zijn engelen uitzenden en zij zullen uit zijn Koninkrijk verzamelen al wat tot zonde verleidt”. (Mattheüs 13:41)

Hun werk ten behoeve van het heil van mensen zal waarschijnlijk in grote lijnen ten einde zijn gekomen, wanneer het Koninkrijk van God op aarde is gekomen. Want dan zullen er mensen zijn die volmaakt en onsterfelijk zijn geworden als de engelen, en dus op dezelfde wijze werk voor Christus kunnen doen als de engelen voor God.

Denkt u dat het mogelijk is dat engelen hebben gezondigd?

An anarchistic reading of the Bible (2)—Creation and what follows

Whilst there may certainly be nothing sacred or “God-ordained” about the modern nation-state, lots of people do claim the connection of their state with the God of their Christian faith. Lots of those claiming to be Christian do not notice they themselves made themselves an own faith which in many cases has gone far away from the leader Christ Jesus his teachings. Even worse many of the conservative Christians and extreme right people have twisted so much the biblical teachings they do not see straight any more.

Lots of people in the so called democratic countries would like to build up their country to what they call to be a free nation, though they want to put a lot of limitations to whom may enter and to what others may believe.
A very good example of such deformation of the mind is the United States of America where there are some citizens who are totally convinced that it is their own home country, not recognising they themselves came from immigrants, thinking their laws should be build on their restricted view of the Bible, ignoring in a certain way the idea of freedom of the Pilgrims who founded their country.

Americans, convinced that the only state they have does not belong to the original locals, redskins or Indians, neither that it belongs to the Divine Creator, are convinced only they can work, according to their measures, to make ‘their state’ the most just and life-enhancing state it can be.
They are also convinced they should also work against their state as strongly as possible when it is unjust and undermines life. Though they often forget which measures or rules they would consider to be the just, righteous and most right to choose for.

Perhaps they can use an anarchist critique of the state and an anarchist affirmation of the human capacity for self-organizing to help to resist the undermining and, even more, to help them as they seek to construct a well-functioning society.

But most of all I would advice those who call themselves Christian to take up again the Bible and to go through it thoroughly.
All people interested in building up a community which can leave together in peace,is better to take up the manual given by the Supreme Writer and Divine Creator of all.

We can approach the Bible as a storybook and see it as providing a loosely coherent message, amidst a great deal of diversity, but than we shall miss out a lot of wisdom provide in it and would not be able so much to see our own stupidities and the stupidities of our governments who do not want to learn from the past, having the past repeating over and over again.

When we look at the Bereshith, the book of the Beginnings brings us the evolution of all things. Lots of conservative Christians do want to take its writing as a literal presentation from day to day, but it was never intended to be so. Moses neither the Client to write, wanted to present humanity with a factual historical scientist into depth account of what happened throughout the years of this universe.
The very beginning of the Bible provides much important information about the Bible as a whole, about the cosmology of the whole, about the character of the God seen to be central to the entire story, and about the relationships between humankind and this God.

Those people taking up the Bible, the infallible Word of God, should remember that the tale told in that Book of books, is to bring us knowledge about our own beings, our own self, how and why we are and how humanity develops.

In this Best-seller of all times, the One giving His Voice, the One Who asked to have His Words written down, This Creator God speaks of His Creation, which includes not only the human beings (male and female) being created in His own image, but also all the things He gave under dominion of those human beings (plants and animals). Though man could make use of it and could give it names, it has made a mess of it, and has done dishonour to the Creator of it. Too many have forgotten that humanity is commissioned to care for the rest of creation as God’s stewards. This is one of the good reasons lots of people should again or for the first time start reading the Bible to find out what their position on this planet is and what they have as task to do to come to a nice good peaceable world.

The Bible tells us what went wrong in the past and how the relationship between God and man became troubled. We do have to find ways to restore that relationship between God and humanity which is not one of domination, command-and-obedience. Yes it is rather a relationship of like with like. God has given several man of God to lead us and to show us the right way to develop. The prophet and master rabbi Jeshua (Jesus Christ) is the most important one to follow. after so much time that the people still did not come to understand the Torah, Jesus came to clarify it once again and to show the Way to God. though Jesus is the Way, he did not want to do his own will nor wants us to do only his will, neither to make him God or to worship him. He wants us to worship and to pray to the same God he prayed to, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, Who is also the God of him (Jesus) and his disciples.

We are told to put on the armour of Christ and to become like Jesus, and to put on the armour of God becoming one with God like Jesus is one with God. Though God is the Most High and even Jesus could not do anything without his heavenly Father, we also shall never be able to do anything without God allowing it to happen. But we are given the words of Christ and the words of the other prophets to help us to find the right way, trying to transform ourselves by the teachings of the master teacher and by the words of the very different books brought together in the Canonical Bible.

We as humans created in the image of God are also by that Creator asked to be like God. And, perhaps even more importantly, the picture here is that all humanity shares in this divine image — kingly, perhaps, but in a strongly egalitarian sense. As well, human beings are given power and responsibility.

The biggest problem is we all are responsible for our own choice and for our own actions. There is nobody else to blame for what we ourselves decide to follow.
It is up to us to take up the Book of books, to believe in it and to follow up freely its advice and wisdom.

to avoid the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (2:17) = restriction > arbitrary rule from a dominating God intended to prevent human enlightenment? => Such an interpretation contradict much of the surrounding story + much of what follows in the Bible.

restriction = symbolizing innate human limitations.

human beings seek to know + use that knowledge to dominate creation => will devolve into power struggles and develop hierarchies

To avoid such a dynamic => to step back from desiring too much “knowledge,” to accept limits, and recognize to live in trust.

“temptation” to violate restriction = too strong => Adam and Eve break the close connection between themselves and God.

coming from human side — after they eat the forbidden fruit, God still seeks to hang around with them in the Garden

humans hide from God (3:8) = they become ashamed of their nakedness.

consequences of this turn toward disharmony = establishment of “enmity” between Adam and Eve (3:15) and of Adam as “ruler” over Eve (3:16).

Not God’s will

new tensions and struggles = characterize human life.

rest of story = God’s work among humanity to overcome this “enmity” and proclivity toward “rulership.”

“fall”= affirmation of fundamental character of human peaceableness and responsiveness to God = complicated by human freedom.

God gives humanity potential to turn away as a key part of basic loving nature of the relationships +> turning away has consequences.

fatalistic interpretation has underwritten power politics over the centuries — the “fallenness” of humanity used as an excuse for a politics of centralized, coercive power.

human proclivity to exercise power in dominating ways = target in story of the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11. = inclination to centralize human power and to create a “oneness” that serves centralized power.

“scattering” Babel-dwellers (3:4, 8, 9), God seeks to create the conditions for a different kind of oneness — human unity respecting diversity, decentralizing power, based on mutual respect.

rest of the Bible’s story describes long, tenuous process of such a oneness being established.

human beings being gifted through God’s Spirit to connect despite their differences in languages, points to the type of oneness God endorses.

God’s healing strategy

genealogy that will connect Noah with the founding of God’s chosen people, we meet the human founders of the Hebrew peoplehood.

God creates something new out of barreness + promises descendants, beyond counting, and the agents of blessing for “all the families of the earth” (12:3).

important intervention of God = vocation God gives Abram, Sarai, and their descendants = God’s response to what happened in Eden, the story of the Flood, and the Tower of Babel => God will bring healing, but it will be patient, non-coercive, based on love and not on domination.

Founding ancestor of God’s chosen people = far from being a king or powerful ruler.

God’s work to bring healing to creation = not linked with territoriality => no geographical kingdom and no human king.

The method for doing God’s work in the world is “blessing” and this work is intended to encompass “all the families of the earth.”

We will have to follow the rest of the story to understand better the political implications of this starting point. But we should notice right away the combination of a lack of state-centeredness and the optimism about the possibilities of this “blessing” spreading widely without domination.

In this survey of some biblical themes looked at from an anarchistic angle, I will not be real precise in my use of “anarchistic.” I’ll be talking about a sensibility more than a full-fledged political philosophy. The key “anarchistic” motifs I will focus on will be a strong suspicion toward centralized social power, especially kingdoms and empires, and an optimism about human possibilities for self-organizing and decentralized social power.

And I will be reading the Bible in fairly naïve and straightforward ways. I approach the Bible as a storybook and see it as providing a loosely coherent message, amidst a great deal of diversity. Waarom God lijden toe laat

Op Bijbelvorsers Webs, de site van de Vereniging voor Bijbelstudie behaalde onderstaande artikel slecht 265 bezichtigingen, tussen haar publikatie op 16 september 2010 en 22 december 2014. Om het na het beëindigen van de Vereniging van Bijbelvorsers te bewaren plaatsen wij het hier op nieuw.

God liet de mensen toe om een tijdelijke ervaring te hebben met het slechte, maar indien de mens zelf niet de keuze had gemaakt om die ervaring te ondergaan dan zou God het hem niet toebedeeld hebben, want God is geen God die er plezier in schept dat de mens zou lijden. God houdt niet van slechte dingen. Hij verwerpt het kwade.

“(5:5) U bent een God die zich niet verheugt in het kwaad, bij u is de misdaad niet welkom.” (Ps 5:4 NBV)

God liet de mens toe om met het kwade te ervaren wat het verschil maakt om in gehoorzaamheid te leven of in eigenzinnigheid met de gepaarde zelfzucht en gevolgen daarvan. Het was de onder druk gekomen geest die zijn lichamelijke toestand schade toe bracht. Zijn wil om meer te hebben dan hij al had bracht hem al de moeilijkheden over hem. De mens verloor zeggenschap over zichzelf. Hij zou door anderen overheerst worden en zou ook meer onderworpen worden aan de aarde. De natuur zou sterker zijn dan hem. De natuurrampen kwamen ook over de mens wegens zijn keuze van ongehoorzaamheid aan God. Doordat Adam oor had gegeven aan zijn vrouw, die op haar beurt slachtoffer was geworden van de slechte gedachten die in haar opkwamen. Door het toegeven aan die gedachten zouden zij en hun nakomelingen de gevolgen van die ongehoorzaamheid moeten dragen.

“17 En tot Adam zei hij: „Omdat gij naar de stem van uw vrouw hebt geluisterd en van de boom zijt gaan eten waaromtrent ik u geboden had: ’Gij moogt daarvan niet eten’, is de aardbodem om uwentwil vervloekt. Met smart zult gij de opbrengst ervan eten al de dagen van uw leven. 18 En doornen en distels zal hij u voortbrengen, en gij moet de plantengroei van het veld eten. 19 In het zweet van uw aangezicht zult gij brood eten, totdat gij tot de aardbodem terugkeert, want daaruit werd gij genomen. In our first article in the series on the Quran reading Muslims got to believe Allah revealed this prayer to Muhammad early in his career as a prophet (which began in the year 610 AD, when he received his first revelation from Allah through the angel Gabriel – a revelation that is now contained in the Qur’an’s 96th chapter) so that the Muslims would know how to pray.

In the 96 chapter verses 1-5 we are asked to “Proclaim!” or “read!” in the name of the Lord and Cherisher, Who created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood (hence the name Adam: the red blood), but also from the “black mud”, and Who is the is Most Bountiful, He Who taught (the use of) the pen (4), taught man that which he knew not.

In the Bible are the human beings created in God’s image. According to the Islam the Quran/Koran rejects such a similarity of the image between God and man explicitly.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:26 ASV)

“And Jehovah God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7 ASV)

“And also the {1} Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent. {1) Or [Victory]; Or [Glory]}” (1 Samuel 15:29 ASV)

Allah is presented as the Most Gracious, Most Merciful Who brought His Message to humankind. According to Muslim tradition it was revealed in a chain of messages starting to the Archangel Gabriel (Jibreel). Soon in the text we remarked that the Islamic community went into the same fault as many Christian denominations taking more attention to traditional human thoughts instead of keeping to the words of their Holy Scripture itself. As such we noticed that by “the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds” several Muslims created their worlds of demons and djinns or Gjinn-people, and like several Christians started to believe in a place of damnation being called “hell“. But from the Quran and the Bible we can only find two worlds: namely the world of the human beings (earth and waters) and the world of the celestial beings (heaven).

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ
And certainly We created man, and We know what his mind suggests to him, and We are nearer to him than his life-vein.(50:16)

الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Who made the earth a resting place for you and the heaven a canopy and (Who) sends down rain from the cloud, then brings forth with it subsistence for you of the fruits; therefore do not set up rivals to Allah while you know.(2:22)

هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَسَوَّاهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ ۚ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

He it is Who created for you all that is in the earth, and He directed Himself to the heaven, so He made them complete seven heavens, and He knows all things.(2:29)

إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَالْفُلْكِ الَّتِي تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنْفَعُ النَّاسَ وَمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ وَتَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day, and the ships that run in the sea with that which profits men, and the water that Allah sends down from the cloud, then gives life with it to the earth after its death and spreads in it all (kinds of) animals, and the changing of the winds and the clouds made subservient between the heaven and the earth, there are signs for a people who understand.(2:164)

وَعِنْدَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ ۚ وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةٍ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ

And with Him are the keys of the unseen treasures– none knows them but He; and He knows what is in the land and the sea, and there falls not a leaf but He knows it, nor a grain in the darkness of the earth, nor anything green nor dry but (it is all) in a clear book.(6:59)

اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ لِتَجْرِيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ بِأَمْرِهِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْأَنْهَارَ

Allah is He Who created the heavens and the earth and sent down water from the clouds, then brought forth with it fruits as a sustenance for you, and He has made the ships subservient to you, that they might run their course in the sea by His command, and He has made the rivers subservient to you.(14:32)

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ

And when your Lord said to the angels: Surely I am going to create a mortal of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape.(15:28)

The opening of the Quran, starting with the prayer:

1 Fatiha, or the Opening Chapter. In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
2 Praise be to Allah, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds;
3 Most Gracious, Most Merciful;
4 Master of the Day of Judgment.
5 Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.
6 Show us the straight way,
7 The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, Those whose portion is not wrath, and who go not astray.

In certain translations is indicated that it is only to Him (Thee alone) to give worship and (Thee alone) to ask for help.

Shakir translates:

5 Thee do we serve and Thee do we beseech for help.
6 Keep us on the right path.
7 The path of those upon whom Thou hast bestowed favors. Not the path of those upon whom Thy wrath is brought down, nor of those who go astray.

Ysufufali and other translaters give:

5 Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.
6 Show us the straight way,
7 The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose portion is not wrath, and who go not astray.

It is clear that to the Most Gracious, Most Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgement the Muslims do want to give praise. It is Him Who they do worship and Whose aid they seek. Normally, like they pray, to worship Him alone, and no imams or khomeinis they also say in their prayer they only ask Allah for help (for each and everything) (5).

001.007 صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا الضَّالِّينَ
001.007 The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray.

In verse 7 the Muslims often add themselves:

The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).

We also hear Muslims speaking about Ṣirāṭ, Siraat, Serat, As-Sirāt

In the previous article we saw the opening prayer, in which one wants to give his gratitude to the Supreme Creator of heaven and earth. In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful they call onto Him and say that He (Allah), the Lord of the Worlds, belongs all praise (2), which means that world also does not belong to imams or Khomeinis, who one really should not support, too, because the Muslims pray and claim that they only beg for help unto the Beneficent, the Merciful, Master of the Day of Judgment. (4-5).
Judgement belongs to the fifth pillar of iman (Imaan) [of the six pillars of Iman (faith)] in addition to the belief in the existence of Angels. The Muslim believes that Judgement Day will come at the time provided for. On this day Allah will judge between people and reward everybody for what he has done.
The Five Pillars of Islam and six pillars of Iman are the foundation of Islam.

It is up to Allah/God that they ask to be lead to the straight path. The path which according to them, that way what God would have them presented by whom He has bestowed favours – not that of those who earn His anger nor went astray.

The Maker and Sustainer of the world, the Creator of and Provider for man, the Active Force and Effective Power in nature are all one and the same, and that is known to be Allah or God. This is the Secret of all secrets and the Most Supreme of all beings. The Holy Qur’an claims to be the True Book of God, in which He says:

It is God Who has made the night for you, that you may rest therein, and the day to see. Verily God is full of Grace and Bounty to men. Yet most men give no thanks. Such is God, your Lord, the Creator of all things. There is no god but He; why then do you turn away from Him. Thus are turned away those who deny the Signs of God. It is God Who has made for you the earth as a resting place and the sky as a shelter, and has given you shape and made your shapes beautiful, and has provided for you sustenance of things good and pure; such is God your Lord. So glory to God, the Lord of the worlds! He is the Living (One); There is no god but He: Call upon Him, giving Him sincere devotion. Praise be to God, Lord of the worlds. (Qur’an, 40:61-65).

In the Bible we are warned we do have to seek the Most High and be ready before His Day of Judgement will come.

“Seek ye Jehovah, all ye meek of the earth, that have kept his ordinances; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye will be hid in the day of Jehovah’s anger.” (Zephaniah 2:3 ASV)

“And Jehovah uttereth his voice before his army; for his camp is very great; for he is strong that executeth his word; for the day of Jehovah is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?” (Joel 2:11 ASV)

“The great day of Jehovah is near, it is near and hasteth greatly, [even] the voice of the day of Jehovah; the mighty man crieth there bitterly.” (Zephaniah 1:14 ASV)

“to the end that ye be not quickly shaken from your mind, nor yet be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by epistle as from us, as that the day of the Lord is just at hand;” (2 Thessalonians 2:2 ASV)

“Ask of me, and I will give [thee] the nations for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.” (Psalms 2:8 ASV)

“And as for both these kings, their hearts shall be to do mischief, and they shall speak lies at one table: but it shall not prosper; for yet the end shall be at the time appointed.” (Daniel 11:27 ASV)

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 10:22 ASV)

“And {1} this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole {2} world for a testimony unto all the nations; and then shall the end come. {1) Or [these good tidings] 2) Gr [inhabited earth]}” (Matthew 24:14 ASV)

Preparing for the Day of Judgement can be managed by seeking Him and by making sure you can find Him and by keeping His commandments. God has given His word to man as a guidebook and help. In the Bible we can find the answers to our questions and we can find sufficient data to ensure that we will be ready when the day of Jehovah comes. For this we have to find the right direction where to go to and have to take the right path on the (high)way to God’s Kingdom.

وَآتَيْنَاهُمَا الْكِتَابَ الْمُسْتَبِينَ

And We gave them both the Book that made (things) clear.(37:117)

وَهَدَيْنَاهُمَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

And We guided them both on the right way.(37:118)

وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُنَا بَيِّنَاتٍ قَالُوا مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا رَجُلٌ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَصُدَّكُمْ عَمَّا كَانَ يَعْبُدُ آبَاؤُكُمْ وَقَالُوا مَا هَٰذَا إِلَّا إِفْكٌ مُفْتَرًى ۚ وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ

And when Our clear communications are recited to them, they say: This is naught but a man who desires to turn you away from that which your fathers worshipped. And they say: This is naught but a lie that is forged. And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it comes to them: This is only clear enchantment.(34:43)

وَمَا آتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنْ كُتُبٍ يَدْرُسُونَهَا ۖ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمْ قَبْلَكَ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ

And We have not given them any books which they read, nor did We send to them before you a warner.(34:44)

Each of us has to make their own choice, and have to do everything to stay on the right track. As human beings we are weak and it can and probably shall happen that we sometimes go wrong. Each time we shall have to adjust and should take care to come back on the right way aiming for the best what is laid in front of us. All people should know they are able to get salvation, and we should look forward to that time that the Word of God is preached all over the world, because than we know that the time is ripe to find the Kingdom of God, close to us.

Those upon whom God’s wrath rests are those who do not want to know Him and do not want to keep His commandments, those who reject the Truth or want to hide it. The ‘erring’ are those who have been misled and who are inconsiderate or choosing human traditions above the Laws of God.

Du‘a is the most powerful weapon of a believer. It can change fate, while no action of ours ever do. It is the essence of ‘Ibadah or worship. With it we can never fail; without it we can never succeed. Sayyiduna Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam states that Almighty Allah says:

أنا عندَ ظنِّ عبدي بي

I am with the supposition of My servant. [Recorded in Bukhari (Hadith 7239), Muslim, Tirmidi, Nisa’i and Ibn Maja on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah]

This means that as a servant imagines or has an opinion concerning Allah, the Merciful Lord accordingly reacts with him. Knowledge and Qudrat is with everything but there is a special proximity of mercy with those who make Du’a to Him. What bigger mercy can a servant ask for than being blessed with the Divine Proximity of the Sublime Lord? Thousands of acceptances and millions of desires and intentions may be sacrificed on such Divine Proximity!

Al-Fatiha [De Opening] Surah 1: 4-7 Barmhartige Heer van de Schepping om ons de juiste weg te tonen

In ons eerste artikel in de reeks over de Koran lezing hebben wij gezien hoe moslims moeten geloven dat Allah dit gebed openbaarde aan Mohammed of Muhammad, in het begin van zijn carrière als een profeet (die in het jaar 610 begon, toen hij zijn eerste openbaring van Allah via de engel Gabriël ontving – een openbaring die nu is opgenomen in hoofdstuk 96 van de Koran), zodat de moslims zouden weten hoe te bidden.

Maar wij hebben ook aangegeven in een inleidend artikel dat de moslim gelooft in de Profeten die vanaf de schepping van de aarde naar de mensheid gezonden zijn, of hun namen bekend zijn of niet. Naast de profeet Mohammed nemen zij ook o.a. Adam, Noeh (Noah/Noë), Ibrahim (Abraham), Moesa/Musa (Mozes), Iesa (Jeshua/Jezus/Jesus) en velen anderen als profeten. Allah heeft enkele Profeten Boeken gegeven met daarin het woord van Allah. De moslim dient ook in deze Boeken te geloven, zoals ze in beginsel neergezonden zijn door Allah, volgens de Moslims. Enkele Boeken zijn bekend bij ons, zoals de Qoran/Quran of Koran, Indjiel/Indjil (Evangeliën), Taurat (Torah/Thora), maar de moslim gelooft ook dat er Boeken zijn neergezonden door Allah die niet (meer) bekend zijn bij de mensen.

In het 96ste hoofdstuk van de Koran, verzen 1-5 worden we gevraagd om te “Verkondigen!” of om te “lezen!” in de naam van de Heer en Steller of Maker, de Volbrenger, Die de mens heeft geschapen uit (louter) een “klonter bloed” (vandaar de naam Adam: het rode bloed), maar ook van de klei of “zwarte aarde (modder)” (15:28), en Wie de Meest Eerbiedwaardige is Die (het gebruik van) de pen leerde (4), en de mens datgene leerde wat hij niet wist.

In de Bijbel wordt de mens geschapen naar Gods evenbeeld. Volgens de islamieten wijst de Koran deze gelijkenis tussen God en mens uitdrukkelijk van de hand.

“God sprak: ‘Nu gaan Wij de mens maken, als beeld van Ons, op Ons gelijkend; hij zal heersen over de vissen van de zee, over de vogels van de lucht, over de tamme dieren, over alle wilde beesten en over al het gedierte dat over de grond kruipt.’” (Genesis 1:26 WV78)

“Toen boetseerde Jahwe God de mens uit stof, van de aarde genomen, en Hij blies hem de levensadem in de neus: zo werd de mens een levend wezen.” (Genesis 2:7 WV78)

Allah wordt gepresenteerd als de Barmhartige, de Genadevolle Die Zijn boodschap aan de mensheid bracht. Volgens de islamitische overlevering werd Zijn Boodschap geopenbaard in een “keten van boodschappen”, te beginnen met de aartsengel Gabriël (Djibriel). In de voorgaande bespreking merkten wij al op dat de islamitische gemeenschap in dezelfde fout ging als veel christelijke denominaties, die meer aandacht aan de traditionele menselijke gedachten schonken, in plaats van zich te houden aan de woorden van de Heilige Schrift zelf zoals zij er in voorkwamen. Als zodanig hebben we gemerkt dat door “de Liefhebbende God en Onderhouder van de wereld” een aantal moslims hun wereld van demonen en djinns of Gjinn-mensen creëerden, en net als een aantal christenen begonnen te geloven in een plaats van verdoemenis die “hel” wordt genoemd. Maar in de koran en de bijbel kunnen we alleen twee werelden vinden : namelijk de wereld van de mens (de aarde en waters) en de wereld van de hemelse wezens (de hemel).

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِ نَفْسُهُ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ

Wij schiepen den mensch en weten wat zijne ziel hem influistert, en wij zijn hem nader dan zijne strotader.(50:16)

الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْأَرْضَ فِرَاشًا وَالسَّمَاءَ بِنَاءً وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ أَنْدَادًا وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

Hij heeft u de aarde tot een tapijt en den hemel tot een overwelfsel gegeven. Hij laat het water van den hemel stroomen, om vruchten tot uw onderhoud voort te brengen. Stel dus geen gelijke naast God, tegen beter weten aan.(2:22)

هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ لَكُمْ مَا فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَسَوَّاهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمَاوَاتٍ ۚ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ

Hij is het, die alles op de aarde voor u geschapen heeft, daarna den hemel uitbreidde en dien tot zeven hemelen maakte; Hij, de alwetende.”(2:29)

إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَالْفُلْكِ الَّتِي تَجْرِي فِي الْبَحْرِ بِمَا يَنْفَعُ النَّاسَ وَمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مِنْ مَاءٍ فَأَحْيَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ وَتَصْرِيفِ الرِّيَاحِ وَالسَّحَابِ الْمُسَخَّرِ بَيْنَ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ لَآيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ

In de schepping van hemel en aarde, en de wisseling van nacht en dag; in het schip dat op de zee zeilt, met hetgeen nuttig voor de menschen is, en in het water dat God van den hemel doet stroomen, om de in den nood verkeerende aarde te doen herleven, waarop hij de verschillende diersoorten verspreidt; in de verandering der winden, en de beweging der wolken, tot het verrichten van den dienst tusschen hemel en aarde bestemd, zijn wonderen voor nadenkende menschen gelegen.(2:164)

وَعِنْدَهُ مَفَاتِحُ الْغَيْبِ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ ۚ وَمَا تَسْقُطُ مِنْ وَرَقَةٍ إِلَّا يَعْلَمُهَا وَلَا حَبَّةٍ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ الْأَرْضِ وَلَا رَطْبٍ وَلَا يَابِسٍ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ

Hij bezit de sleutels der geheimen; niemand kent die buiten hem; hij weet wat op het droge land en in de zee is; er valt geen blad af, of hij weet het; nergens is een eenvoudige zaadkorrel in de duistere gedeelten der aarde, nergens een groen of verdord spruitje, dat niet in het duidelijke boek is opgeschreven.(6:59)

اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ وَأَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقًا لَكُمْ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ لِتَجْرِيَ فِي الْبَحْرِ بِأَمْرِهِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ الْأَنْهَارَ

God is het die de hemelen en de aarde heeft geschapen en het water van den hemel doet nederdalen, door middel van hetwelk hij vruchten voor uw onderhoud voortbrengt; en door zijn bevel noodzaakt hij de schepen voor uwen dienst op zee te zeilen; ook dwingt hij de rivieren u cijnsbaar te zijn:(14:32)

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي خَالِقٌ بَشَرًا مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ مِنْ حَمَإٍ مَسْنُونٍ

En gedenk, toen de Heer tot de engelen zeide: Waarlijk, ik heb den mensch geschapen van gedroogde klei, van zwart slijk, in een vorm gebracht.(15:28)

In het vorige artikel zagen wij de opening van het gebed, waarin men erkenning wil geven van zijn erkentelijkheid aan de Allerhoogste Schepper van hemel en aarde. In naam van Allah, de Barmhartige, de Genadevolle roept men Hem aan en zegt men dat Hij (Allah), de Heer der Werelden, alle lof toebehoort (2) zij Allah, wat inhoudt dat die wereld dan ook niet toebehoort aan imams/imaans of khomeinis, op wie men ook eigenlijk niet moet steunen, want de Moslims bidden en beweren dat zij alleen tot de Barmhartige, de Genadevolle, Meester van de Dag des Oordeels (vandaar ook Dag van Jehovah) smeken om hulp. (4-5).

De Dag des Oordeels of laatste oordeel behoort tot de vijfde zuil van imaan [van de zes zuilen van imaan (geloof) ] naast het geloof in het bestaan van de Engelen. De moslim gelooft dat de Dag des Oordeels zal aanbreken op het daarvoor vastgestelde tijdstip. Op deze dag zal Allah oordelen tussen de mensen en iedereen belonen voor wat hij gedaan heeft. De vijf zuilen van islam* en zes zuilen van imaan** (al iman) vormen het fundament van de Islam.

Iedereen in de wereld wordt gewaarschuwd om God te zoeken en zich klaar te maken voor de dag van het oordeel, voor het te laat is.

“Zoekt Jahwe, gij allen, ootmoedigen van het land, die zijn geboden naleeft; zoekt de gerechtigheid, zoekt de ootmoed! Dan vindt gij misschien een schuilplaats op de dag van de toorn van Jahwe. de vijand in het westen” (Sefanja 2:3 WV78)“Jahwe, aan de spits van zijn leger, verheft zijn stem; ja, zeer talrijk is zijn leger, ja, machtig is hij die zijn bevel ten uitvoer brengt. Ja, groot is de dag van Jahwe en zeer te duchten: wie zal hem doorstaan?” (Joël 2:11 WV78)“Nabij is de grote dag van Jahwe, hij is nabij en nadert snel. Hoor, hoe bitter hij is, de dag van Jahwe: dan heft de held zijn strijdkreet aan.” (Sefanja 1:14 WV78)

“niet zo gauw uw bezinning te verliezen en u niet te laten opschrikken door profetieen, uitspraken of brieven die van ons afkomstig zouden zijn, en die beweren dat de dag van de Heer is aangebroken.” (2 Thessalonicen 2:2 WV78)

“Vraag het Mij slechts en Ik geef volkeren u tot een erfdeel, u tot een eigen bezit de aarde tot aan haar randen.” (Psalmen 2:8 WV78)

Het voorbereiden op de Dag des Oordeels kan gescheiden door God te zoeken, Hem te vinden en Zijn geboden te onderhouden. God heeft Zijn Woord aan de mensen gegeven als een Leidraad en Gids. In de Bijbel kunnen wij de antwoorden op onze vragen vinden en kunnen wij voldoende gegevens vinden om er voor te zorgen dat wij klaar zullen zijn als de Dag van Jehovah aanbreekt.

Het is aan Allah/God dat de Islamieten vragen om hen te leiden op het rechte pad. Het pad of juiste weg, wat volgens hen ook die weg is welke God voorgelegd zou hebben aan hen wie Gij gunsten heeft geschonken – niet dat van hen, op wie toorn is nedergedaald, noch dat der dwalenden.

God heeft Zijn Woord aan de wereld gegeven, dat als Leidraad en Gids tot Hulp kan zijn om dichter bij God te komen en toegang te verkrijgen tot het Koninkrijk van God. Het komt er op aan om dat pad, of weg te kunnen vinden. Elkeen is persoonlijk verantwoordelijk voor de richting die zij willen inslaan. Hiertoe moeten wij de juiste keuze maken en de juiste weg inslaan maar ook kunnen volharden in het volgen van dat juiste pad.

Wa ‘Ātaynāhumā Al-Kitāba Al-Mustabīna	[37.117] En Wij gaven hun het duidelijke boek.	وَ‌آتَيْنَاهُمَا‌ ‌الْكِت‍‍َ‍ابَ ‌الْمُسْتَب‍‍ِ‍ي‍‍نَ

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَا تَأْتِينَا السَّاعَةُ ۖ قُلْ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّي لَتَأْتِيَنَّكُمْ عَالِمِ الْغَيْبِ ۖ لَا يَعْزُبُ عَنْهُ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا أَصْغَرُ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَا أَكْبَرُ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ

De ongeloovigen zeggen: Het uur des oordeels zal tot ons niet komen. Antwoord: Ja! bij mijn Heer, het zal zekerlijk tot u komen: hij is het die de verborgen geheimen kent, zelfs tot het gewicht van een atoom, hetzij zich dit in den hemel of op aarde bevindt; ieder ding hetzij het kleiner of grooter dan dit mocht zijn, is hem bekend, en het is opgeschreven in het duidelijke boek zijner besluiten.(34:3)

لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَرِزْقٌ كَرِيمٌ

Opdat hij hen moge beloonen, die geloofd en rechtvaardigheid uitgeoefend hebben; zij zullen vergiffenis en eene eervolle belooning ontvangen.(34:4)

When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they make it known (among the people), if only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly). Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allah upon you, you would have followed Shaytan, save a few of you. [Soorah An Nisa 4:83]

Therefore as it relates to the great affairs which concern the Ummah—from them being Jihad—the final say belongs to the Muslim ruler; it is not for any and everyone (to have a say in the matter). End Quote.
The Prophet صَلَّى اللََُّّ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , said:

إِنَّمَا الِْْمَامُ جُنَّةٌ يُقَاتَلُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ

Get Your Wonderful Disease-proof Human Body from Elohim!!

Today, mankind is fighting a losing battle against an ever-growing menace to life. This menace is disease. Mankind’s body is constantly besieged by disease-causing bacteria, germs, viruses, etc.

Man’s body, composed of earth, has become the habitat of all types of parasites and killer micro organisms commonly available in soil—their natural habitat!

Elohim foresaw lifestyles of mankind rendering His disease control mechanisms placed in man ineffective to all manner of diseases—epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, AIDS, . . .—and, therefore, about two millennia ago, put in place a miracle healthcare plan that would give mankind a disease-proof body!

Before this disease-proof body became available to mankind, Elohim, over the entire period that the Old Covenant was running, constantly announced its coming and demonstrated its veracity and glory in, and by, His dealings with Israel.

Hear what Elohim says to Israel under the Old Covenant—

“. . . for I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Exodus 15:26); “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases” (Psalm 103:3);

and

“He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions” (Psalm 107:20).

When Yeshua began his earthly ministry, he announced that he came bringing Eternal Life — the Life of the Creator — to indwell individual bodies of mankind (John 3:14-16) by recreating the bodies of all who would believe in him, to make them disease-proof, and to co-join all of such bodies to his own disease-proof body in a tree-and-branch relationship (John 15:5).

When fulfilment of John 3:14-16 was due for mankind to access the blessing of such a disease-proof human body, Yeshua’s own disease-proof body was bruised with whip lashes (Isaiah 53:4-5, First Peter 2:24), and hung on a pole outside the Holy City, in similar manner that the bronze serpent in Israel’s wilderness journey was hung on a pole outside the camp, to heal people from snake bites (Numbers 21:5-9).

Today, anybody who is led in the Wisdom of Elohim to Mt. Calvary to behold the disfigured body of the Saviour on a pole, with an understanding of that horrible spectacle, and who sorrows in his heart for his sins being the cause of what happened to the Saviour, gains instant healing for his disease-riddled body!

Elohim’s wish is for the repentant sinner to keep this healed body, forever! Elohim, therefore, takes him one step further in this regard — He instructs this healed person to go through the ordinance of baptism into Yeshua.

When one enters the waters of baptism, the wisdom and power of Elohim act to immediately dissolve the whole vile body of the one, and then reassembles it after whatever contaminants were in this body, arising from the sin of the first Adam, have been dropped in the water!

This mystery of baptism brings to mind how salt is separated from salt-sand mixtures; that is, dissolving the salt-sand mixture in a container with water to have the insoluble sand settled at the bottom of the container, and then, evaporating to dryness the obtained brine to recover sand-free salt.

All suitable waters for baptism are, in effect, two liquids in one mix — the blood of Yeshua and a salt solution. Bodies of those baptized into Yeshua, therefore, are become reconstituted as mixes of water, salt, and the blood of Yeshua (Ezekiel 16:4, Matthew 5:13, Ephesians 5:30, First John 5:6).

The salt within them makes it impossible for disease-causing micro organisms to enter this body or live in it. Also, miraculously, the blood of Yeshua in this body ensures no sin stays within it, for this blood constantly cleanses this wonder body from sin (First John 1:7)

To forever render this wonder body, made of water, salt, and the blood of Yeshua, impervious to all unwanted substances, it must be thoroughly baked. Baked? Yes; baked in the fires of the Holy Spirit as The Potter must do to His molded clay vessels in order to eternally preserve them!!

So then, as the born again person walks out of the waters of baptism, the Holy Spirit of Elohim rushes into him to take full possession of his newly created body, in completion of the born of water and of the Spirit process of John 3:5.

In as much as all sicknesses result from the committing of sin, this sin-proof human body, indeed, becomes a bank of inexhaustible vibrant life—the very Life of the Creator—that may even be dispensed in faith in “laying of hands” by the human vessel holding it to heal any people suffering from diseases!!

For those genuinely born again into the salvation of Elohim, their disease-proof bodies become His dwelling places, unable to suffer disease while He is actively resident in them! This is what it means for a man to have Eternal Life dwelling in him while living here on earth!!

Marriage of Jesus 10 Old and New Covenant

Harvard Divinity School Professor Karen King agrees that the fragment, written in Coptic, she analysed,

“does not, however, provide evidence that the historical Jesus was married, nor does it prove that he was not married. The earliest reliable historical tradition is completely silent on that. So we’re in the same position we were before it was found. We don’t know if he was married or not.”

In the previous postings I mentioned already that when we look at the accounts of Jesus’ life in the Bible and the many non-religious writings of the early centuries, there is no mention of his marital status, while the accounts do mention Jesus’ mother, father and siblings.

Darrell Bock, a senior research professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminar said:

“There’s no indication we have that Jesus was married. One could say the text is silent on Jesus’ marital status because there was nothing to say.”

Bock agreed with the notion that the text fragment shared similarities with the Gnostic Gospels and said the text could be referring to a gnostic rite of marriage but

“it’s a small text with very little context. We don’t know what’s wrapped around it to know what it’s saying.”

King writes:

“the importance of the ‘Gospel of Jesus’ Wife’ lies in supplying a new voice within the diverse chorus of early Christian traditions about Jesus that documents that some Christians depicted Jesus as married.”

In “Marriage of Jesus 8 Wife of Yahweh” and “Marriage of Jesus 9 Reason for a new marriage” I pointed out to the Wife of God, indicating the Book of books speaks about God being married to Israel, but this being spiritually talking about the relationship of Jehovah God with His Chosen People, Israel, or the Israelites, the religious Jews. From the Old Testament text we can understand that Jehovah God cast Israel off as a wife, and that it was impossible for Him to marry her as a “virgin” (Jeremiah 3:1-18; Ezekiel 16; Hosea 2; 3:1-5). We can see what faithless Israel has done and find God giving her the notice or her certificate of divorce and having sent her away because of all her adulteries.

“She saw that for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too went and played the whore.” (Jeremiah 3:8 ESV)

God had made a promise to Abraham, that his seed would multiply and God would make a people for Him out of his descendants. God always keeps to His promises. One of them, at the beginning of human history,just after the foundation of the earth, was also that He would provide a solution for the sin the first man and woman (the 1° Adam and Eve) committed. There He indicated already His special relationship with the human beings, and planned for a son to whom He would give the throne to restore the paradise and bring to fulfilment the clean and safe Kingdom of God (the 2° Adam).

” And [Psa. 102:25-27 says “Thou, Yahweh/Adonay/Jehovah”], “Lord, in the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hand. (11) They will be destroyed, but you will remain. And they [i.e., the heavens and earth] will all wear out like an article of clothing. (12) And you will fold them up like a robe, and they will be changed like an article of clothing. But you will stay the same and your years will never end.” (13) But which one of the angels did God ever say [this] about [Psa. 110:1], “You should sit at my right side until I put your enemies [in full subjection] beneath your feet?”” (Heb 1:10-13 AUV)

“So [then], we [Christians] should pay closer attention to the things we have heard, so that we do not drift away from [believing and practicing] them. (2) For if the message spoken through angels proved to be binding [Note: This is a reference to the Law of Moses. See Acts 7:53; Gal. 3:19], and every violation [of it] and disobedience [to it] received a just penalty, (3) how will we escape [punishment] if we neglect such a great salvation? [For it was] first announced [to people] by the Lord and then confirmed to us [i.e., the writer and other Christians] by those who heard Him [i.e., the original apostles]. (4) God also testified, along with those people, by [giving them] both signs and wonders and various miracles, and by [supernatural] gifts distributed [to them] by the Holy Spirit, as He desired. (5) For God did not place the coming inhabited world [Note: “The coming inhabited world” here probably refers to the present Christian age. It was viewed as “coming” from the perspective of Old Testament times], under the control of angels [and] that is the world we are talking about.” (Heb 2:1-5 AUV)

With regards to which of the angelic messengers “emissaries”, none where invited tocome to sit next to God, but His son Jeshua (Jesus Christ), who was first lower than the angels (remember God is, was and always shall be the Most High) was placed higher after his resurrection and invited to come to sit at the right hand of God to become a mediator between God and man. In case Jesus was God he could not be sitting next to himself nor take on the duty of mediator or intermediary. His position as arbitrator for man and woman would be of no value either when he would have been God and the end judge of it all. The third party has to be someone other than the principals who are involved in a transaction. In the Bible is also written that he would hand over the Kingdom of God to his Father. In case he himself is the same person as the Father there is no use nor any possibility to hand over the Kingdom to himself.

But in the text in front of us we hear about the world to come: the New World. The angels are ministering spirits, servants, with no royal dignity; having a subordinate role of serving God. God’s concern is not with angels, but with us, and He accordingly sends those angels or messengers of God, to bring help to those who will inherit salvation.

“And if children, then also lawfully-allotted ones, lawfully-allotted ones surely of God, moreover, lawfully-allotted-with the Anointed One, if- we -wholly suffer-with Him, in order that, we may also be given splendor-with Him.” (Romans 8:17 AS )

In the Old Times God shared His passion with His people, who kept stubborn and did not want to recognise the Promised One, the Christos, or Christ the Messiah. God placed Jesus in a higher position than His angels and by doing this God’s glory becomes Christ’s glory and finally, in measure, our glory also, because in him, Jesus Christ, we can be saved and become part of the Body of Christ. The apostle Paul brings some ‘with’ words in his 8° letter to the Romans (8:1-39), that testify of what we are and what we do jointly with Christ. There it is said the Anointed One should be from-within us, being lawfully-allotted ones, joint-heirs with the Anointed, even when we ourselves still dare to groan inside ourselves, waiting for our adoption, to wit, the ransom of our body, we may find not such an adoption, becoming children of God, but also finding the redemption of the body we still have here on earth. God did not spare His own son Jeshua, but delivered him up for us all. (Romans 8:32) This Jesus is raised up, and is actually at the right hand of God, and makes intercession for us. (Romans 8:34) In the Old World the angels were in charge.

” Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold, And see the reward of the wicked. (9) For thou, O Jehovah, art my refuge! Thou hast made the Most High thy habitation; (10) There shall no evil befall thee, Neither shall any plague come nigh thy tent. (11) For he will give his angels charge over thee, To keep thee in all thy ways. (12) They shall bear thee up in their hands, Lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:8-12 ASV)

But now God choose a cornerstone in His son, to whom angels already came to minister him in his lifetime (Matthew 4:11; cp Matthew 26:53)

” You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, (8) putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. (9) But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:7-9 ESV)

We all share in flesh and blood, the same as the son of God Jesus Christ partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the evil, the adversary of God. For ages God’s People where thrown through and fro and often did not make a proper choice. Because of His great dissatisfaction god was not inclined any more to keep the bond of His ‘marriage’ with them alone. Too many times the Israelites were ill-disposed to their Creator. They often behaved unlawful and that hurtled the Most High in such a way that He allowed His son to provide a New Covenant, to deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery (Hebrews 2:15).

God renewed His bond or covenant with His son and with the Spiritual Israel, which had to become the Church of God, the Body of Christ where the Nazarene Jeshua (Jesus) would be the cornerstone, to bring the lovers of God close to Him and to put down the adversaries or hostile ones, their necks under his foot.

Besides the heavenly Bride, the transfigured, translated, and risen Church, reigning over the earth with Christ, there is also the earthly bride, Israel, in the flesh, never yet divorced, though for a time separated, from her divine husband, who shall then be reunited to the Lord and be mother Church of the millennial earth, Christianized through her. Note, we ought, as Scripture does, restrict the language drawn from marriage—love to the Bride, the Church as a whole; not use it as individuals in our relation to Christ, as Rome does in the case of her nuns.” { All the Women of the Bible » Chapter 4. In his teaching period Jesus explained that some people may prefer to stay single “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:12). We should understand that by choosing celibacy to have more time to devote to proclaiming and living out God’s kingdom. They would find earthly responsibilities, such as those that go with marriage and parenting, a hindrance to their kingdom calling. This is similar to the situation of the disciples who were called away from their professions (fishermen, tax collectors, etc.) in order to follow Jesus with singular purpose. As I mentioned earlier such people consider themselves as married to Christ. They have taken Christ as their “bride“, like Jesus preferred to stay single and be the spouse or “wife of God“.

We always should remember that the Old Testament uses a lot of metaphors, and marriage is such one of them. Early Christians also used such metaphors to describe the relationship between celibate believers and Christ. Nuptial imagery is commonly used to describe salvation and heaven in the New Testament; and later Christian martyrs are sometimes called or portrayed as brides of Christ.

In the most difficult book of the bible, the apostle John describes in his vision the marriage scene in which the Bridegroom makes His Bride His wife. The ones who accept Christ as the son of God and their saviour may be glad and rejoice, and give honour now to him they wanted to follow and God raised out of the dead. He, the Lamb of God has now been taken up in heaven where the marriage of the Lamb took place. The ‘new’ wife of God or the wife for us in heaven has made herself ready in the presence of the one who is presented in fine linen, clean and white, like so many women their wedding dress. For the fine linen is the righteousness of saints, the ones who are set-apart from the world. The followers of Christ may become part of the new Israel, the new chosen people of God, though they might have been gentiles, they are now called righteous and also sons and daughters of God. We should know that blessed are they which are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb, Jesus Messiah. We all better listen to the true sayings of God. We best remember what He has done for us and whom He provided for us and how we should worship that only One True God,the Father of Jesus, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

“Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; (8) it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. (9) And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” (10) Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” (Revelation 19:7-10 ESV )

A woman, of course, only becomes a wife on the completion of her marriage to the man to whom she has been engaged or espoused. In this age of Grace, the church is the affianced Bride of Christ. The “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife,” a papyrus written in Coptic and containing text that refers to Jesus being married, is looking more and more like it is not authentic, research is revealing.

Conclusion

Professor King has devoted much of her scholarly career to making a case that the early church falsely constructed an orthodox understanding of Jesus that minimized the role of women. Back in 2003 she released The Gospel of Mary of Magdala: Jesus and the First Woman Apostle, in which she argued that at least some ancient texts pointed to Mary Magdalene as an apostle. In 2012 she told the writer for Smithsonian: “You’re talking to someone who’s trying to integrate a whole set of ‘heretical’ literature into the standard history.” {It’s Back — The “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife” and the State of Modern Scholarship}

King saying

“it does not make sense that a forger with poor Coptic and scribal skills could also manage to acquire the right kind of papyrus and ink, and leave no ink out of place at the microscopic level.”

in her judgment may be right that “such a combination of bumbling and sophistication seems extremely unlikely” and that the world has a genuine old manuscript. But this does not mean it is a worthy “gospel” fragment or a sacred text.

King said.

“Is Jesus talking about a real wife, or the church, or a sister-wife? Who is the Mary—his mother, his wife, or some other Mary entirely?”

As I tried to explain in these 10 chapters is that we might understand it that when we would like to translate it with “wife” we should understand it to be a “woman” or female person in the bond of covenant-ship of being a pupil or follower of Christ.

What also might be important is that certain conservative ideas about the role of women in church herewith would be contradicted. If the papyrus fragment reflects religious writing copied from earlier texts, perhaps ones in the fourth century, it would speak to early Christian concerns about the role of the family in the early Church, which famously called upon its adherents to put aside family and civic loyalties, King suggests.

“This is not evidence that Jesus was married. We don’t know,”

Professor King originally interpreted the document as a debate about celibacy and had said:

“But early Christians were extremely interested in questions about whether they should be married or be celibate.”

Last month she added:

‘Now when I come back and read the fragment, it seems the major issue being talked about was that Jesus was affirming that wives and mothers can be his disciples,’ she said in an interview earlier this week.

The Harvard Divinity School writes:

If ancient, this tiny, damaged fragment provides tantalizing glimpses into issues about family, discipleship, and marriage that concerned ancient Christians. The main topic of the dialogue between Jesus and his disciples is one that deeply concerned early Christians, who were asked to put loyalty to Jesus before their natal families, as the New Testament gospels show. Christians were talking about themselves as a family, with God the Father, his son Jesus, and members as brothers and sisters. The particular focus in the Gospel of Jesus’s Wife, however, is on women: his mother, Mary, his wife, and a female disciple. The disciples discuss whether Mary is worthy, and Jesus states that “she can be my disciple.” These signs indicate some controversy over whether women who are sexually active (mothers and wives) can be disciples of Jesus. Other early Christian writings defend marriage and reproduction against fellow Christians who think virginity and celibacy are required for all, or who argue that “women are not worthy of life.”

This gospel fragment provides a reason to reconsider what we thought we knew by asking what role claims about Jesus’ marital status played historically in early Christian controversies over marriage, celibacy, and family. The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife makes it possible to say that some early Christians believed that Jesus was married. This conclusion potentially has significant implications for the history of ancient Christian attitudes toward marriage, sexuality, and reproduction.

I agree with professor King that the papyrus may show that there were early Christians for whom …

“sexual union in marriage could be an imitation of God’s creativity and it could be spiritually proper and appropriate.”

For her the so-called ‘Gospel of Jesus’ Wife’ may have been thrown out

“because the ideas it contained flowed so strongly against the ascetic currents of the tides in which Christian practices and understandings of marriage and sexual intercourse were surging.”

This representation of Jesus as a man with earthly passions and needs has not survived in the doctrines of the established churches, which emphasise celibacy and asceticism as a spiritual ideal. We as Christians should remember how Jesus preached equality between man and how we all had to love each other becoming one, united. Men and women equally united in the lord Christ Jesus, having the bride Jesus, him married to spiritual Israel, the Church.

The ‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’ is Still as Big a Mystery as Ever
Given that King announced the discovery at a professional conference and immediately made preliminary test results and high-resolution photographs available to the world, it is difficult to know what she could have done differently. Certainly a more somber title—something in Latin perhaps—would have conveyed more nuance and garnered less attention, but getting attention for the discovery and the field was King’s aim. It used to be the case that papyrus discoveries were routinely announced on the front pages of the Times of London, but things have changed. It’s tough out there when you’re not a Kardashian, and a catchy title and clear message can go a long way. It’s rare for scholars to pass up the opportunity to reach a broader audience when the opportunity presents itself, even if that means giving up some precision.

It’s Back — The “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife” and the State of Modern Scholarship

Last week, the Harvard Theological Review released a much-delayed series of articles on the fragment. After a series of investigations undertaken by diverse scholars, the general judgment claimed by Professor King is that the fragment probably is not a forgery — or at least that it dates back to ancient times. The analysis suggested that the fragment dated from about four centuries later than Professor King had first suggested. This would place the fragment, if authentic, in the context of eighth-century Egypt — hundreds of years after the New Testament was written and completed.

The language used by the national media in reporting the story this time reveals the lack of confidence now placed in the fragment. The Boston Globe reported that the tests “have turned up no evidence of modern forgery,” but the reporter had to acknowledge that at least one of the scholars writing in the Harvard Theological Review insisted that the fragment is not only a forgery, but an amateurish effort. The New York Times ran a story that featured a headline announcing that the fragment “is more likely ancient than fake.” Note the uncertainty evident even in the headline.

“The Gospel of Jesus’ Wife? When Sensationalism Masquerades as Scholarship,”
One British newspaper notes that the claims about a married Jesus seem more worthy of fans of Dan Brown’s fictional work, The Da Vinci Code, than “real-life Harvard professors.” If the fragment is authenticated, the existence of this little document will be of interest to historians of the era, but it is insanity to make the claims now running through the media.

“No Evidence of Modern Forgery in Ancient Text Mentioning Jesus’s Wife,”
Specialists said, hypothetically, that a highly skilled modern forger could have obtained the right kind of ink and meticulously applied it to a blank piece of ancient papyrus.

Determining the age of the ink using conventional testing methods would destroy the tiny document, roughly the size of a business card. Groundbreaking work by Columbia University researchers may soon uncover a way to date the ink without harming the fragment, which would offer a more definitive verdict about its authenticity.

‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’ likely isn’t a modern forgery, scientists claim
The Vatican has previously said that the document is most likely a modern forgery, but scientists from Columbia University, Harvard, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology say their analysis strongly suggests that it is indeed part of an ancient manuscript and that it wasn’t edited or tampered with. The researchers used micro-Raman and infrared spectroscopy to analyze the composition of the ink, looking for clues as to whether it may have been applied after the original document was damaged.
“There is absolutely no evidence for that,” Timothy Swager, an MIT chemistry professor who worked on the project, tells the New York Times. “It would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible.” The researchers dated the fragment to between the sixth and ninth century AD, noting that it bears a strong resemblance to other texts from that era.

The ‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’ Is Real: What Now?
As with all scholarly work on the ancient world, it seems impossible to ever fully resolve disputes over the text and its interpretations. This isn’t the last word on the Gospel of Jesus’s Wife, but it is a fragment of understanding about how early Christians saw their savior.

No Forgery Evidence Seen in “Gospel of Jesus’s Wife” Papyrus
One report in the journal, by epigrapher Leo Depuydt of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, claims grammatical errors dog the text and concludes, “The author of this analysis has not the slightest doubt that the document is a forgery, and not a very good one at that.”

Overall, he suggests that the papyrus was forged from a copy of the ancient Gospel of Thomas text, discovered less than a century ago in Egypt.

King refutes those criticisms in a response in the journal, arguing that the grammar errors are misinterpretations by Depuydt. She also argues that writings similar to the Gospel of Thomas were then prevalent in the eastern Mediterranean, so words from that gospel would not necessarily be a sign of forgery.

In the journal reports, a chemistry team led by MIT’s Joseph Azzarelli concluded that the age of the papyrus scrap matches that of a verified Gospel of John papyrus from antiquity. The team relied on microspectroscopy of the papyrus, which found the fragment only slightly less oxidized—aged by exposure to air—than the verified gospel.

Likewise, Columbia University’s James Yardley and Alexis Hagadorn looked at the pigments in the ink on the fragment. They found it similar to “lamp black” ink used on other ancient texts.

‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’: Doubts Raised About Ancient Text
In an effort to confirm the origins of the papyrus and discover its history, Live Science went searching for more information about Laukamp and his descendents, business partners or friends.

Our findings indicate that Laukamp was a co-owner of the now-defunct ACMB-American Corporation for Milling and Boreworks in Venice, Fla. Documents filed in Sarasota County, Fla., show that Laukamp was based in Germany at the time of his death in 2002 and that a man named René Ernest was named as the representative of his estate in Sarasota County. In an exchange of emails in German, Ernest said that Laukamp did not collect antiquities, did not own this papyrus and, in fact, was living in West Berlin in 1963, so he couldn’t have crossed the Berlin Wall into Potsdam. Laukamp, he said, was a toolmaker and had no interest in old things. In fact, Ernest was astonished to hear that Laukamp’s name had been linked to this papyrus.

Debate over the fragment’s authenticity is set to continue as some will no doubt question these latest findings.

Additional tests showed that the ink’s chemical composition is consistent with other inks used by the ancient Egyptians, while microscopic imaging found no suspicious ink pooling that critics of the papyrus said was evidence of the ink being applied in more recent times.

At the same time, other papyri from the collection were tested for means of comparison. One of those was a fragment from the canonical Gospel’ of John written in a rare ancient dialect of Coptic known as Lycopolitan. A Lycopolitan version of John, which was first published in 1924, is now available online.

Many people over the centuries have tried to work out a ‘bloodline’ for possible descendants of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Many historians agree that there is no historical, biblical, archaeological or genetic evidence to support the idea.

New clues cast doubt on ‘Gospel of Jesus’ Wife’

Once we started carbon-dating papyrus, forgers started using authentically ancient papyrus. Once we discovered how to identify ancient ink by its chemical composition, forgers started creating precisely the same ink.

Like steroids in sports, it’s safe to assume that the best bad guys are always one step ahead of the science.

And yet, the dating of the papyrus and ink did shift the burden back on to the doubters. And just this past week, they seem to have discovered something as close to proof as we can really expect in cases like this.

Add to this the fact that the carbon dating of the John papyrus puts it in the seventh to ninth centuries, but Lycopolitan died out as a language sometime before the sixth century. No one wrote anything in Lycopolitan in the period in which this text would have to be dated.

This forgery was detected not through lab analysis but through good old-fashioned humanities-based detective work. This was Sherlock Holmes, not “CSI.”

‘Gospel of Jesus’s Wife’ Looks More and More Like a Fake

Just recently, Christian Askeland, a research associate with the Institut für Septuaginta-und biblische Textforschung in Wuppertal Germany, revealed new information that casts further doubt on the papyrus’ authenticity. His work is set to be published in the journal Tyndale Bulletin and is currently posted on a blog.

Askeland analyzed a second papyrus that, according to documents published in the Harvard Theological Review, was also purchased by the anonymous owner from Laukamp. It was presented to Harvard as a papyrus believed to be genuine.

This second papyrus, which has writing on two sides, includes text from the Gospel of John — and is a fake, writes Askeland, its lines being copied from a papyrus published in 1924. A newly revealed, centuries-old papyrus fragment suggests that some early Christians might have believed Jesus was married.
