US urges NATO vigilance for signs Russia could use nuclear weapon in Ukraine

April 18, 2023 event:

The U.S. and its NATO allies must remain alert for signs Russian President Vladimir Putin could use a tactical nuclear weapon in a “managed” escalation of his war in Ukraine, the second-highest U.S. diplomat said on Tuesday. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman issued the warning during the opening session of an annual NATO arms control conference that was being held in North America for the first time since its inception in 2004. “We have all watched and worried that Vladimir Putin would use what he considers a non-strategic tactical nuclear weapon or use some demonstration effect to escalate, but in an managed risk escalation,” Sherman said. “It is very critical to remain watchful of this.” Putin’s March 25 announcement that Russia is preparing to station tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus “is his effort to use this threat in a managed way,” Sherman said.

Comment

There is a lot of talk in the press that Ukraine is about to launch a major push back against Russia. But could Putin be defeated and pushed out of Ukraine? Or is it more likely Putin will resort to greater and greater destruction to bring about a permanent stalemate – even an agreement- forced on Ukraine by the West? The latter seems unlikely currently but it is actually the most probable outcome. Putin must succeed and be able to declare some victory. The minimum victory he wants is the recognition that the Donbass region and Crimea are now Russian. The way he could bring nations to the table is by showing he will go to ANY lengths to achieve this goal. Tactical nuclear weapons are much smaller nukes and the fear is Putin may well use them. The Bible says Gog / Putin brings about “fearful destruction and shall succeed in what he does…”

when the transgressors have reached their full measure, a king of bold countenance, one who understands riddles, shall arise. His power shall be great, and he shall cause fearful destruction, and shall succeed in what he does, and destroy mighty men and the people of the saints. (Daniel 8:23-24)

UN suspends Russia from human rights body over atrocities in Ukraine

Event:

United Nations (UN) General Assembly hall at the UN Headquarters, New York City, 2006

The United Nations general assembly has voted to suspend Russia from the human rights council after images of atrocities apparently showing civilians left dead in the streets with their hands bound emerged following Russian troops’ withdrawal from around Kyiv. The call for Russia’s removal from the UN’s top human rights body was led by the United States, which concluded that Russian forces had committed war crimes. In a vote yesterday it gained the support of 93 countries. They were urged on by Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s ambassador, who told diplomats that “pressing ‘no’ means pulling the trigger, and means a red dot on the [voting] screen, red as the blood of the innocent lives lost”. Russia had said it would consider a yes vote an unfriendly act that would affect its bilateral relations with those countries. President Biden said he applauded the “overwhelming vote.”

Russia has become a pariah state and is being ostracised by the majority of nations in the world. It is hard to see how Russia comes back from this. Such is the violence and horror that Putin’s soldiers have carried out there is no chance he will ever be welcome in the institutions the world has created. But this makes Putin even more dangerous. Many analysts say he will resort to ever greater levels of atrocity. Isolated, angry but surrounded only by people who agree with his every word Putin will look to avenge his humiliation in Ukraine. Daniel 8 says that Putin (latter day Antiochus Epiphanes the original king of the north) will “cause a shocking amount of destruction”. Another version says he will “cause astounding devastation.” The AV says “he shall destroy wonderfully.”

Putin will not be cowed by events turning against him in Ukraine – he will destroy more.

At the end of their rule, when their sin is at its height, a fierce king, a master of intrigue, will rise to power. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause a shocking amount of destruction and succeed in everything he does. (Daniel 8:23-24 NLT)

Putin lays out his demands in Turkish phone call

Putin lays out his demands in Turkish phone call

Turkey has positioned itself with great care to be the go-between with Russia and Ukraine – and this seems to be paying off.

On Thursday afternoon, President Vladimir Putin rang the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and told him what Russia’s precise demands were for a peace deal with Ukraine. The Russian demands fall into two categories. Chief among them is an acceptance by Ukraine that it should be neutral and should not apply to join Nato. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has already conceded this. Ukraine would have to undergo a disarmament process to ensure it wasn’t a threat to Russia. There would have to be protection for the Russian language in Ukraine. And there is something called de-Nazification. Russia will demand that the Ukrainian government should give up territory in eastern Ukraine. That will be deeply contentious. Russia will also demand that Ukraine should formally accept that Crimea.

Turkey is allied to Russia when Russia descends into Israel at some point in the future. But Turkey and Ukraine have a long chronology of historical, geographic, and cultural contact. Turkey became one of the first states in the world to announce officially about recognition of sovereign Ukraine in the early 90’s. Turkey’s relations with Russia are more cyclical. But overall they have improved significantly in recent years.

Russia became Turkey’s largest provider of energy, while many Turkish companies began to operate in Russia.

The Bible says that Turkey will be allied to Russia when it invades Israel. So it is interesting to see them playing the role of “go-between” at this time. Putin’s end game is to take east Ukraine – the final part of ancient Magog….

Gomer, and all his bands; the house of Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: and many people with thee. Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard [protection] unto them. (Ezekiel 38:4)

Gomer and Togarmah are both areas of modern Turkey.

Antisemitism animating Putin’s claim to ‘denazify’ Ukraine

Antisemitism animating Putin’s claim to ‘denazify’ Ukraine

The Russian leader’s pretext for invasion recasts Ukraine’s Jewish president as a Nazi and Russian Christians as true victims of the Holocaust.
When Russian president Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at dawn on Thursday, he justified the “special military operation” as having the goal to “denazify” Ukraine.

Ukraine is a democratic country, whose popular president was elected, in a free and fair election, with over 70% of the vote. That president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is Jewish, and comes from a family partially wiped out in the Nazi Holocaust.

Vladimir Putin is himself a fascist autocrat. Fascism is a cult of the leader, who promises national restoration in the face of supposed humiliation by ethnic or religious minorities, liberals, immigrants etc. The dominant version of antisemitism alive in parts of eastern Europe today is that Jews employ the Holocaust to seize the victimhood narrative from the “real” victims of the Nazis, who are Russian Christians.

After Volodymyr Zelensky won the Ukrainian presidency in a landslide in April 2019, his country became the only country besides Israel with a Jewish president and prime minister. It’s remarkable given that only a tiny minority of Ukraine is Jewish. And yet Putin in his rationale for invading Ukraine said that his mission is to “denazify” Ukraine.
By claiming that the aim of the invasion is to “denazify” Ukraine, Putin appeals to the myths of contemporary eastern European antisemitism – that a global elite of Jews were (and are) the real agents of violence against Russian Christians and the real victims of the Nazis were not the Jews, but rather this group. Hence the hatred of Zelenskiy. Russian president Dmitry Medvedev denounced Zelenskiy as disgusting, corrupt and faithless. The true colours of Putin’s view of the Jews is now in the open….

a fierce king, a master of intrigue, will rise to power. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause a shocking amount of destruction and succeed in everything he does. He will destroy powerful leaders and devastate the holy people. (Daniel 8:23-24 NLT)

Israel weighing options amid deepening Russia-Ukraine crisis

Israel weighing options amid deepening Russia-Ukraine crisis

Israel is considering its position as tensions rise on the Russia-Ukraine border, and the Foreign Ministry plans to deliberate the matter on Monday. Jerusalem has generally maintained a position of neutrality between the countries since their 2014 war.

Maintaining good relations with Moscow is a strategic interest for Israel in light of Russia’s significant military presence in Syria. Israel also has strong ties with Ukraine in a variety of areas, and Kyiv has the support of Israel’s most important ally, the US, in the current crisis. Another major concern for Israel is how the Ukraine-Russia crisis will impact the Iran nuclear talks. The US and Russia sit around the same table, and their delegations met in Vienna over the weekend. Mikhail Ulynanov, head of the Russian delegation to the Iran talks, on Saturday 22 tweeted:

“Russia-US relations are in extremely bad shape. However, on Iran we managed to work productively so far.”

Israel is very concerned about how a Ukraine / Russian war could play out as far as they are concerned. According to analysts the moment of truth is coming if war begins. There would be pressure on Israel to take a side. The US would pressure to condemn Russian action as well as pressure from Ukraine itself. There is a very large Ukrainian community in Israel who will want Israel to back Ukraine. There is also the concern over how the war in Ukraine could impact the delicate Iranian talks. Russia and the US are working together on Iran at the moment. But conflict in Ukraine could throw a major spanner in the works. This could lead to Iran breaking out for a nuclear weapon with Moscow’s blessing as a punishment to the West. We are on the brink of major events…

The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares:. “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. (Zechariah 12:1-2 NIV)

Moscow lists demands for defusing Ukraine tensions

Moscow lists demands for defusing Ukraine tensions

Russia said on Friday it wanted a legally binding guarantee that NATO would give up any military activity in Eastern Europe and Ukraine, part of a wish list of security guarantees it wants to negotiate with the West.

Moscow for the first time laid out in detail demands that it says are essential for lowering tensions in Europe and defusing a crisis over Ukraine, which Western countries have accused Russia of sizing up for a potential invasion after building up troops near the border. Russia has denied planning an invasion. The demands contain elements – such as an effective Russian veto on future NATO membership for Ukraine – that the West has already ruled out.
Others would imply the removal of U.S. nuclear weapons from Europe and the withdrawal of multinational NATO battalions from Poland and from the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania that were once in the Soviet Union.

Steve Rosenberg is the BBC’s Moscow correspondent and has been for many years. This is his analysis of the situation.

“Diplomacy is the art of the possible. Well it was… until now. It’s virtually impossible to imagine the US and Nato signing the draft documents Russian diplomats have drawn up, without considerable changes. Russia is demanding a veto on who joins the Alliance. A non-starter. Nato has said many times before that Moscow can have no say over who gets to be a member. Plus the Russians want to turn the clock back to May 1997. Any country that joined the Nato alliance after that date won’t be allowed Nato troops or weaponry. Moscow knows very well it’s demanding things the West won’t deliver, so why ask?”

Russia is demanding the “impossible” as far as NATO is concerned. This could be Putin’s way of blaming the West when (if) war starts on their own intransigence. Gog is preparing for war….

Be thou prepared, and prepare for thyself, thou, and all thy company that are assembled unto thee, and be thou a guard unto them.  After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, (Ezekiel 38:7-8)

PM warns Vladimir Putin against ‘tragic mistake’ as tensions rise with Ukraine

Boris Johnson warned Vladimir Putin against making a “tragic mistake” as tensions rise on the border between Russia and Ukraine. The Prime Minister appearing at the Commons Liaison Committee, was asked about the problems between Belarus and Poland and the situation in Ukraine. Thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, have been amassing at the Belarus border with Poland for months. Brussels has accused Belarus’s authoritarian president Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, of deliberately encouraging the migrants to breach its borders in retaliation for sanctions the EU has imposed in response to his repressive rule. Downing Street has also voiced concern about the build-up of Russian forces on Russia’s border with Ukraine. The Kremlin has dismissed claims that it is preparing to invade, after the Ukrainian defence ministry reported that around 90,000 Russian troops were massing in the area.

Russia is causing a great deal of alarm currently in Europe. It is causing concern on two fronts – Poland and Ukraine. The two cases are very different. Poland is part of NATO. This means that an attack on Poland is essentially an attack on all members of NATO and it could trigger a response from the entire alliance. Ukraine is not in NATO and is therefore more vulnerable. Putin has placed tens of thousands of troops and next to Ukraine’s broader. Eastern Ukraine was once part of the original territory of Magog – and therefore it is highly possible Putin will one day want to take it – Gog is “of Magog”. Britain is part of the king of the south power and therefore Boris Johnson warning Putin is effectively the king of the south warning the king of the north (Russia).

The Word of the Lord came to me saying,  “Son of man, look toward Gog of the land of Magog, the leader of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and speak against him. Tell him, ‘The Lord God says, “I am against you, O Gog, leader of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. (Ezekiel 38:1-3 NLT)

Entering a new period of ‘Cold War’

Signs of the times

Empire-building

News reports almost every day confirm the perception that Western leaders are increasingly nervous about the activities and intentions of Russia: we seem to be entering a new period of ‘Cold War’.

Western sanctions

English: Russian naval forces prepare to come ...

The crisis over Ukraine has led to harsh economic sanctions being imposed on Russia by the US, the EU and other countries, in an attempt to isolate the Moscow government. Russia has responded with sanctions of her own, including a ban on food imports from the US, Canada, EU, Australia and Norway. This has led to a financial crisis in Russia. The rouble went into free-fall – a combination of sanctions and cheaper oil; in 2014 it lost more than half its value against the dollar. Potentially Mr Putin could be in serious difficulties. Indeed, his disappearance from public view for a while recently led to feverish speculation in the Western press that there might have been a coup against him – which proved to be unfounded.

Symbolic help?

NATO is also attempting to pile on the pressure. In a largely symbolic gesture, NATO soldiers in full combat gear took part in a military parade to celebrate Estonia’s Independence Day (February 24), held close to a border checkpoint with Russia. Also in February Britain announced that she would join America in helping to train Ukraine’s armed forces, and last month that work began. The BBC reported that British military personnel will give training “in medicine and defensive tactics and give non-lethal equipment …The British government is also supplying first aid kits, sleeping bags and night-vision goggles as part of its pledge to provide assistance and more British teams are expected to arrive in Ukraine over the coming weeks” (March 19). The Ukrainian Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, in welcoming the assistance, saw it as a “first step” and expected that the USA and other European countries would follow suit. “Please help us to defend our country and your peace”, he said.

Despite words of appreciation from Kiev – and predictable criticism from Moscow – it is difficult to see the help as being anything more than symbolic, especially with Britain’s reducing defence budget. America has stated its intention to send a battalion for training purposes, but in a recent article in The Daily Telegraph, Fraser Nelson argues that “Barack Obama has concluded that while the Ukraine crisis may be a problem for Europe, it’s not really one for America” (February 27).

Russia’s extending influence

Location of Cyprus within Europe and the Europ...

There are other indications that despite Russia’s economic woes, Mr Putin may be more than holding his own, especially in exploiting any cracks in European unity. An example of this was clearly seen at the end of February when Russia and Cyprus signed a number of agreements. These provide for interest rates to be cut on a 2.5 billion euro bailout loan from Russia to Cyprus and extend payments by several years; they also allow Russian naval vessels access to Cypriot ports. With the Syrian civil war still raging, and an uncertain outcome, Russia’s well-publicised naval base at Tartus may be at risk; thus access to ports in Cyprus will have real strategic value for the Russian navy, as well as sending out a message to the world at large that a Russian presence in the eastern Mediterranean is here to stay.

Last October The Moscow Times, in connection with some Russian naval exercises, stated:

“The Soviet Union’s Fifth Naval Squadron maintained a permanent presence in the Mediterranean Sea for most of the Cold War. But as its economic and military power shrank in the 1990s following the fall of communism, Russia disbanded the unit, limiting itself to temporary tours in the area. But the ambition remained. Recently, with the ongoing modernization of the Black Sea Fleet following Crimea’s annexation from Ukraine in March, Russian naval planners have re-energized plans to re-establish the permanent force, which would allow Russia to secure shipping access to the Suez Canal and extend its influence in the Middle East” (October 16, 2014).

The latest agreement with Cyprus will enable Russia to move one step closer to achieving this aim.

The situation is potentially awkward for the UK that still has military bases on Cyprus. In the article by Fraser Nelson referred to above, he observes:

“It’s quite a coup for the Kremlin. Cyprus was British until 1960; now it has been absorbed into Putin’s new empire. It’s not an empire that NATO, with its Cold War mindset, would recognise; it’s not one that can be described by colouring in nations on a map. This is an empire of influence – far cheaper to acquire, harder to spot and easier to maintain. It doesn’t cost much for Russia to provide eighty per cent of foreign investment into Cyprus, but with investment comes gratitude. Cyprus, an EU member, opposes sanctions on Russia – making the hard task of a common EU foreign policy that little bit harder”.

In addition to this, a recent Stratfor report argued that Russia has been working hard “to boost its leverage in Central Europe over the past few years”, with the Ukraine crisis giving added impetus to this policy. There is particular interest in

Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic that are struggling to balance between Russia and the West … Central Europe is strategically important to Russia because of its geographic location on the eastern edges of the European Union and NATO” (March 4).

The extension of Russian influence, however it is achieved, is entirely in line with expectations based on Bible prophecy. When the latter-day invasion of the Middle East and specifically the land of Israel occurs, as foretold by the prophets, it will be so devastating that the only possible counter-response will be a weak protest,

“Art thou come to take a spoil?” (Ezekiel 38:13).

To the surprise of the conqueror, and indeed the world at large, the invasion will be met by an overwhelming divine response, heralding the new age of Christ’s kingdom upon earth.

  • Syria Talks to Reopen in Moscow to Focus on Humanitarian Issues, Russia’s Role (israelnationalnews.com)
Talks on ending the Syrian civil war open in Moscow on Monday, but with key opposition figures absent, little progress is expected on resolving the shifting conflict. Instead, the discussions are expected to focus on humanitarian issues and serve as a way for Russia, a main backer of the Syrian regime, to build its profile as a potential mediator in the conflict.
  • Information Warfare: The Russian Exception (strategypage.com)
Russian media, using government data, recently understated the number of military bases that Russia operates outside its borders; apparently forgetting about the several bases Russia has in the Caucasus and elsewhere. This came about when the Russian president, at the high-profile annual press conference was asked about the possibility of a “new Cold War” and Russia’s aggressive moves around its Western borders. The reply insisted that it was in fact the West who was being aggressive. This was emphasized by pointing out that there are a lot more American military bases abroad than Russian ones, and certainly a lot more American military personnel deployed close to Russia’s borders than the other way around. But this response neglected to mention several other bases Russia has abroad:
  • Russia’s Overseas Military Bases (matthewaid.com)
It might be beneficial for American and European leaders to think about an actual reengagement approach with Russia and look at the rationale for the actions of their adversary. As every nation state operates in within their own self-interests, Russia is no exception to this. The security concerns stated by Russia due to possible NATO expansion into the former Soviet Union are legitimate to Russia. But the U.S. and Europe don’t accept this as this is done at the invitation of Russian neighbors that fear a return of the traditional Russian aggression against its neighbors. If this is ultimately responsible for the creation of a new Cold War it is merely a recycling of what caused the first Cold War. Russia does not accept the fact that their aggression is never acceptable to anyone. – Ryan Schinault

As ISIS first blitzed across northern Iraq in June 2014, the militants seized large quantities of US arms and vehicles from the fleeing Iraqi forces.

Following Vladimir Putin’s demands for an “immediate cessation of military activities” in Yemen, AFP reports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s comment during a recent interview that “with complete confidence that we welcome any widening of the Russian presence in the eastern Mediterranean and on Syrian coasts and ports,” including the port of Tartus. Amid the Western-backed opposition National Coalition’s planned boycott of talks, Assad pointedly remarked, “the negotiating parties must be independent and must reflect what the Syrian people want… people would not accept that their future, their fate, or their rules are decided from outside.”
  • Czech President, US Envoy Spar Over Moscow Parade (voanews.com)
Czech President Milos Zeman has “closed the door” of Prague Castle to the U.S. ambassador, Andrew Schapiro, following the envoy’s comments comments perceived as critical of the Czech leader’s decision to attend a World War II commemoration in Moscow, according to local media reports.

European Union leaders are boycotting the ceremony in May over Russia’s role in the Ukraine conflict, though Zeman – who frequently has departed from the EU line – has said he would attend.

  • Czech president ‘bans US ambassador from Prague Castle’ over Russia visit (theguardian.com)
Schapiro told Czech television earlier this week it would be “awkward” should Zeman attend the ceremony as the only statesmen from an EU country.

Zeman, a former prime minister, has criticised sanctions against Moscow. The Czech government, which is responsible for foreign policy, has held the EU line.

The Czech presidency is largely a ceremonial role but Zeman – the first president to be directly elected, taking office in 2013 – is outspoken on his views on both domestic and foreign policy.

  • As Syrian Civil War Rages On, Chemical Weapons Use Persists (foreignpolicy.com)
recent days have made clear just how tenuous the dream of eliminating Syria’s stockpile had been all along. Earlier this week, Syrian rights activists reported the Syrian government forces had dropped barrel bombs containing chlorine gas on the city of Sarmin. The Syrian government has — of course — denied responsibility and blamed the attack on rebel groups.

On Thursday, Secretary of State John Kerry condemned the regime’s reported use of chlorine. “While we cannot yet confirm details, if true, this would be only the latest tragic example of the Assad regime’s atrocities against the Syrian people, which the entire international community must condemn,” Kerry said in a statement.

And as chlorine has reappeared on the Syrian battlefield, the weapon has apparently also made its way into Iraq. Over the weekend, Iraqi Kurdish officials alleged that Islamic State forces had used chlorine gas — the origin of which is unclear but was probably pilfered from Syrian government stocks — in an attack on their troops.

Zeman, a former prime minister, has frequently departed from the common EU line onUkraine and criticized sanctions against Moscow. The government, which is responsible for foreign policy, however, has held the EU line fully.

Bible students who have considered the prophecies of the Old Testament have long looked for a dominant, powerful and arrogant Russia. This understanding of Bible prophecy seemed almost laughable even only 30 years ago but since the fall of the Soviet UnionRussia’s power has been on the rise. So much so that in recent events we see unfolding before our eyes the aggressive, ambitious and powerful Russia has now reached a stage where the other nations of the world can do little or nothing to keep her inline with their world view. This rise from the ashes of communism and dominance in the East is precisely what we would expect from examining Bible prophecy.

The best the EU has been able to do is put asset freezes and travel bans on about 30 Russian individuals it holds responsible. In an article entitled “Putin laughs off sanctions as he signs bills to transfer Crimea to Russia” The Guardian newspaper reported Putin was jovial about the sanctions and even made jokes on the issue. He knows he is dominant and the West can do nothing of impact. {Russia’s President Putin and the Gogian Style Rule}

  • So what happens next? Putins project of war (opentheword.org)
The pattern of aggression from Russia resembles Nazi Germany’s expansion at the beginning of World War II and there is real potential for the crisis to become a serious war. The situation is scary, and some Christians have wondered if this is the beginning of the end and if Vladimir Putin is the Antichrist. So should we be afraid?

There are at least two things we should know:

    • War is a project and successful projects always have deep roots in planning. The plans for this Russian conquest project are probably larger than the seizure of Crimea. Much more is planned and this is not a good time to be living near Russia.
    • The Bible predicts where this project will go. Bible prophecy often predicts the future by showing how humans always behave. The past is the future in the Bible. For example, we were told 2000 years ago that there were already many antichrists among us (1 John 2:18) and “many deceivers are entered into the world … this is … an antichrist” (2 John 1:7). The final great Antichrist will be nothing new. He (or she) will be corrupt like all the others, but with the power to dominate the whole world.

Meeting for the first time since last week’s annexation of Crimea by Russia, Group of Seven leaders said last night they won’t attend a planned G-8 meeting which was to have been held in Sochi, site of the Winter Olympics, and will instead hold their own summit in June in Brussels. Both sides in Ukraine’s crisis spent the day calculating what to do next, with Russia consolidating its control over Crimea and maintaining forces along the border with Ukraine in the most serious confrontation between Moscow and the U.S. and its allies since the demise of the Soviet Union.

“While a Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine can by no means be excluded, Putin must surely calculate that it would be a poor and risky option,” Roderic Lyne, deputy chairman of Chatham House and a former U.K. ambassador to Moscow, said in a website comment. “He also knows that it would trigger much deeper Western sanctions, which would hit his Achilles heel –- Russia’s declining, unreformed economy.”
