How do I know what God’s will is

Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to live and to please God, even as you are living, that you excel more and more.  (2)  For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.  (3)  For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality,  (4)  that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor,  (5)  not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who do not know God;  (6)  that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified.  (7)  For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification.  (8)  Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you. (1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 NHEBJE)

Many Christians ask the question

“How do I know what God’s will is for my course in life?”

God’s will is the same for all His people – sanctification. So the question follows

“What is sanctification?”

God’s will for all His people is that they should be holy, and this is similar to Hebrews 12.14 which tells us that we must strive for that holiness without which we cannot see the Lord.

It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?  (8)  But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not children.  (9)  Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?  (10)  For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness.  (11)  All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.  (12)  Therefore, lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees,  (13)  and make straight paths for your feet, so that which is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.  (14)  Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man will see the Lord, (Hebrews 12:7-14 NHEBJE)

Sanctification is not possible without Jesus, his life in us by the Holy Spirit is the only way to God and through that process we become like him.

  • Where There are no Denominations (
In Jesus’ church, there are no denominations. Jesus’ church is simpler than the complex collection of differing manmade Christian organizations. Jesus’ church is the family of Spirit-filled believers.
  • Thanksgiving (
Thank you, God, for the opportunity to know the Savior Jesus Christ and for the boutiful blessings of His salvation. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for your willingness to occupy this heart that for so many years searched unsuccessfully for happiness and contentment in spite of all the blessings you’d already given me.
  • The Divinity of the Spirit continued (
Paul infers that we are the temple of God, from the fact that “the Spirit of God dwelleth in us,” (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; and 2 Corinthians 6:16.) Now it ought not to be slightly overlooked, that all the promises which God makes of choosing us to himself as a temple, receive their only fulfillment by his Spirit dwelling in us.
  • Daily prayer (0: have a restorative day (0: (
Lord-surround us with the blood of Christ and let us feel your hands in our life. Send the angel of healing to our hearts, our souls, our minds and our bodies. In Jesus name rebuke all negativity, all pain, all sorrow and stumbling blocks in our lives; all interference, all walls and all resistance to your plan.
  • Confidence and Assurance (
Confidence and assurance of salvation is never self-righteous presumption when our confidence and assurance is in the Lord Jesus Christ and based upon HIS great work of redemption to put away our sins by the sacrifice of Himself. This kind of confidence and assurance is given to God’s people by the Holy Spirit when in the new birth He imparts spiritual life, convicts us of sin, and gives us knowledge of and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • The Spirit of might (
The expression of might in the life of Jesus was with regards to casting out of devils and healing the sick (Acts 10:38). It was an expression of power to cause reversals. He breaks whatever chains that was holding people down as the harbinger of freedom.
  • The Cleansing, Healing Work of the Holy Spirit (
There are two kinds of wounds to the human psyche. One is sorrow; the other is guilt. Sorrow is a clean wound. Somehow your heart will heal as the Holy Spirit applies His healing balm.
  • Grab it (
As a believer, you are not left to your own resources to cope with problems. Even when you don’t know the right words to pray, the Holy Spirit prays with and for you, and God answers. With God helping you pray, you don’t need to be afraid to come before him. Ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for you “in harmony with God’s own will.” Then, when you bring your requests to God, trust that he will always do what is best.
  • You Can Do It! (
There is an innumerable number of people whose desire to serve the Lord leads to nothing simply because they are afraid to take the risk of making an effort. These are people whose talents are lost because they rely on themselves and on inadequate resources. They fail in their attempt, or even worse, they just don’t try.
  • The Theory, the Practice (
Putting sin to death is at once so simple and so excruciatingly difficult. The theory of it is simple enough, but the practice takes a lifetime. It is fascinating to me that in John Owen’s Overcoming Sin and Temptation he dedicates thirteen chapters to the preparatory work of putting sin to death, but just one chapter to the actual practice of it. That fact alone is worth pondering.
