Hoe u „de zin van Christus” leert kennen

Om de zin van Christus te hebben, moet u die zin echter eerst kennen. Daarom is de eerste stap bij het ontwikkelen van spiritualiteit dat u Jezus’ manier van denken leert kennen. Maar hoe leert u de denkwijze kennen van iemand die tweeduizend jaar geleden op aarde heeft geleefd? Nu, hoe bent u, om een voorbeeld te noemen, iets over de historische figuren van uw land te weten gekomen? Waarschijnlijk door over hen te lezen. Zo is ook het lezen van een historisch verslag over Jezus een belangrijke manier om de zin van Christus te leren kennen.

3 Dit betekent eeuwig leven,+ dat zij voortdurend kennis+ in zich opnemen van u,* de enige ware God,+ en van hem die gij hebt uitgezonden, Jezus Christus.+ (Johannes 17:3).

In Jezus’ geval beschikken we over vier levendige historische verslagen: de evangeliën, geschreven door Mattheüs, Markus, Lukas en Johannes. Door deze verslagen aandachtig te lezen, wordt u geholpen te begrijpen hoe Jezus dacht en wat zijn diepste gevoelens en de drijfveren achter zijn daden waren. Als u de tijd neemt om te overdenken wat u over Jezus leest, vormt u zich een beeld van de soort mens die hij was. Zelfs als u zich al als een volgeling van Christus beschouwt, zal dat lezen en mediteren u helpen om te doen wat in 2 Petrus 3:18 staat: „Gaat voort te groeien in de onverdiende goedheid en kennis van onze Heer en Redder Jezus Christus.”

17 GIJ daarom, geliefden, weest, nu GIJ dit vooruit weet,+ op UW hoede dat GIJ U niet met hen laat meeslepen door de dwaling van personen die de wet trotseren* en UW eigen standvastigheid verliest.+ 18 Neen, maar gaat voort te groeien in de onverdiende goedheid en kennis van onze Heer en Redder Jezus Christus.+ Hem [zij] de heerlijkheid, zowel nu als tot de dag der eeuwigheid.+ (2 Petrus 3:17-18)

Laten we met dat in gedachten enkele passages uit de evangeliën de revue laten passeren om te zien wat Jezus tot zo’n spiritueel mens maakte. Vraag u vervolgens af hoe u zijn voorbeeld kunt volgen.

14 Indien ik daarom, ofschoon ik Heer en Leraar ben, UW voeten heb gewassen,+ dan behoort ook GIJ elkaars voeten te wassen.+ 15 Want ik heb U het voorbeeld gegeven, opdat ook GIJ zoudt doen zoals ik U heb gedaan.+ (Johannes 13:14-15).

38 En wie zijn martelpaal* niet aanvaardt en mij niet navolgt, is mij niet waardig.+ (Mattheüs 10:38)

29 Neemt mijn juk+ op U* en leert van mij,*+ want ik ben zachtaardig+ en ootmoedig van hart, en GIJ zult verkwikking+ vinden voor UW ziel.*  30 Want mijn juk is weldadig en mijn vracht is licht.”+ (Mattheüs 11:29-30)

24 Toen zei Jezus tot zijn discipelen: „Wil iemand achter mij komen, dan moet hij zichzelf verloochenen en zijn martelpaal* opnemen en mij voortdurend+ volgen. (Mattheüs 16:24)

3 Doet en onderhoudt daarom alles wat zij U zeggen,+ maar doet niet naar hun daden,+ want zij zeggen het wel, maar volbrengen het niet. (Mattheüs 23:3)

34 Nu riep hij de schare samen met zijn discipelen bij zich en zei tot hen: „Wil iemand achter mij komen, dan moet hij zichzelf verloochenen en zijn martelpaal* opnemen en mij voortdurend volgen.+ (Markus 8:34)

23 Toen zei hij verder tot allen: „Wil iemand achter mij komen, dan moet hij zichzelf verloochenen+ en zijn martelpaal* dag aan dag opnemen en mij voortdurend volgen.+ (Lukas 9:23)

27 Wie zijn martelpaal* niet draagt en niet achter mij komt, kan mijn discipel niet zijn.+ (Lukas 14:27)

5 Bewaart die geestesgesteldheid* in U welke ook in Christus Jezus was,+ (Filippenzen 2:5)

10 Ikzelf nu, Pa̱u̱lus, die wel gering in verschijning+ onder U ben, maar wanneer afwezig stoutmoedig ben tegenover U,+ doe U bij de zachtaardigheid+ en goedheid*+ van de Christus een dringend verzoek. (2 Korinthiërs 10:1)

5 Moge nu de God die volharding en vertroosting schenkt, geven dat GIJ onder elkaar dezelfde geestesgesteldheid+ hebt die Christus Jezus bezat, (Romeinen 15:5)

21 GIJ werd trouwens tot deze [loopbaan] geroepen, want ook Christus heeft voor U geleden,+ U een model* nalatend opdat GIJ nauwkeurig in zijn voetstappen zoudt treden.+ (1 Petrus 2:21)

6 Wie zegt in eendracht met hem te blijven,+ is verplicht ook zelf zó te blijven wandelen als hij gewandeld heeft.+ (1 Johannes 2:6)
